Has anyone recently taken an AR-15 into the US with a Form 6 NIA?

The reason I ask is that I have not crossed the border in the last couple of years with an AR and thought that I would enter the 3-gun match in Montana next month. I am also looking at getting a new lower receiver (Alberta Tactical) and it seemed like a good idea to contact the BATF and see if I could temporarily import a non-US made AR into the US for a shooting competition.

I just got off the phone with Mike Coyne (?) of the BATF - Firearms Import Branch and he says the Alberta Tactical AR is not an issue, but any AR is a problem. He said that NO AR can be temporarily imported for a shooting competition as the AR has been deemed to not be a sporting arm. Pre-ban, post-ban, where it was manufactured makes no difference. I asked if this was a recent change of interpretation and he said no that this is the way it has been for years. I decided not to challenge him on this by mentioning the previous Form 6 NIA's that I had that allowed the temp import of AR's.

Has anyone else heard that AR's can not be temporarily taken into the US for shooting competitions or did I just get this guy on a bad day?

He's on crack. Unfortunately, folks in that department have an infinite supply of shady quality. Don't expect the same answer twice.

Send in your Form 6 NIA and don't worry.

I was gonna say the same thing. However, I think(and I'm pretty sure) that there is a restriction on the minimum barrel lenght. But may be you know that already. I just thought it was worth mentionning.

You can take any non-NFA device into the United States.

Meaning that as long as it is not a machine-gun, a short-barrelled rifle (less than 16 inch) or short barrelled shotgun (less than 18 inch), suppressors, stuff larger than .50 caliber, shotguns of smaller gauge than 12, rifles/shotguns under 26 inches in total length, pistols with forward hand-grips, crazy stuff like smooth-bore pistols, cane-guns, disguised firearms, grenades, missiles, grenade launchers, etc, it's fine.

Although you don't have to follows the US parts count rule, I think you still have to be in compliance with the state rules, so for example, if folding/collapsing stocks are prohibited, or if flash hiders are verboten, or if bayo-lugs are a no-no, then you should have none of that.

My AR15 with 16.1" barrel is on my current Form 6 NIA. It's got all the black gun bells and whistles and there were no problems getting it included. The ban on temporary importation of non sporting guns was removed when the assault rifle ban expired.

'Been hauling AR's back and forth between here avd the US for the last seven or eight years... 'Never an issue.

Is there a thread on here that talks about bringing firearms into the US? I've always wanted to bring a handgun or something down there to go shoot at a range with some family.

I'm glad someone could figure out the "rules".
I got so pizzed off, I emailed ATF to see if my RA XCR was legal.

Thanks to all.

Later...
