AR-15 M4 recommendations

I'm in agreement that you will thank yourself if you just save up a little more and buy quality the first time, like Daniel Defense, BCM, Colt, or Colt Canada. I started with a Norc M4 and it wasn't long before I really had the itch for something nicer, so I ended up spending again to get my DD.
That being said, I will never write Norinco off as junk. My Norc M4 never once failed me and is certainly an inexpensive way to get into the AR game. The problem however came when trying to mod it up a little, most parts require a little custom fitting for the Norc, and of course the fit/finish is lacking.
Choice is yours, I've always had good luck with Norinco having owned a number of their firearms, but once you buy the good stuff is hard to go back. Might as well just start with the good stuff.

Option 1) buy cheap Norc for 530 from Canam, chances are you will get one that function just fine for what you are going to need it for for the next 10 years.

Option 2) Bite the bullet, save for a few more months and buy a Colt 6920 from IRG 1300-1500 delivered depending on the dollar and get a top of the line rifle that WILL function reliably for as long as you live.

Really all depends on your situation, either way another AR owner is always a good thing.

Check out the IRG PSA, great option for 7-800.
 
This is how I do things, take it for what it's worth.

If I want an AR, and only have 600 available to fund it, I buy a Norinco. Not because it's what I plan on having for years to come, but because I can afford it now, and most importantly ENJOY it now.

I continue to save for the better rifle. Several months down the road when I have saved up enough to upgrade, up goes the Norinco on EE to recoup a chunk of funds (we all know depreciation on the EE is not massive- $400-450 is considered a VERY fair price for used Norinco) then buy the better AR. All while having an AR to enjoy.

Otherwise my money just sits in the bank NOT putting tiny .223 holes in paper like it should be!

If you go with the Colt, your getting a true M4, not a reversed engineered clone. Your rifle will be a true mil-spec, high quality firearm. The Magpul models are a real nice out of the box, ready go shooter at a great price (even better if the dollar goes back up).
 
Need to look harder man!

Norinco's go for about $550 + tax and the 2 new colts I bought were $1220 and $1420 including tax and shipping

I own a norinco and they are just fine for the range, the fit and finish is sometimes dodgy, but they work just fine

No point buying norinco now when dpms's are available for around $600 and other American brands for not much more $

Yeah, this is helpful.... one can get lost looking into the choices out there, as well as spend a small fortune.

But I can't help wondering and thinking of buying say a Dominion arms to beat on and see if this is something I would like to keep doing and invest in?

Later I can go buy the Diemaco Colt that is at my local shop. (Heavy barrel for 2k is that about right?)

If I am going to invest I might as well get the best + made in Canada.

+1. My first AR was a Norc, despite being a little rough around the edges, I found nothing wrong with it. Bought it because at the time, it was all I could afford, and I enjoyed it for several years. I now own a Colt LE6920 as well as a Colt Canada/Diemaco SA20, but if all I had was $500, I’d probably spring for a Norc again if I really wanted an AR right this minute, or maybe save a bit longer to get a DPMS for a bit more, or a Stag or Colt from IRG for a little more than the DPMS.

No brand snobbery here, just decide when you want it, and what you can afford. If it’s now and all you have is $500-600, get the Norc, if it’s “I can wait”, then wait and save-up.

This right here. I own a Daniel Defense MK18, love it to death. Top quality Ar's and are easy on the eyes as well. Have put 500 rounds through mine from bulk American eagle, military grade rounds and Crappy Tire steel cased and it has had no problems. Wolverine had an awesome deal on them a little while back. I think one or two rifles were on sale and any DD rifle came with 5 free e lander magazines or something!? Wish I had of knew this was coming along before I bought mine. Best of luck, buying your first AR can be troublesome but spend the little extra cash and buy quality and you will thank yourself.

Yeah just ordered my Norinco. Not sure how deep I'm going to dive in, so as long as it gets me started and gets the job done, think I'll be happy. And with the extra $700 saved, can buy some ammo. I for one think $700 is a big difference, and not just a little more. I'm all for quality, but like I said, I can't throw around money. Will update this in a few months with my feelings then haha
 
700 is over twice as much... I agree.

If you enjoy shooting the AR, you can upgrade later. Plus think how much more you will notice the quality differences and appreciate it.
 
I've purchased two ar15's that were mix'n'match. I got frustrated with reliability and just went for a complete, new ar15.

My Daniel Defence has been amazing and like it was said "buy once, cry once".

I'd skip over the Norcs, they work but they aren't a rifle I'd want to grow into.
