AR-15 mags

Look for mags that have a rivet in them that restrict them to five rounds
The mags that I have (can't remember the brand), are not riveted but are crimped so they could never be put back to full capacity
Some mags have an internal follower to limit capacity (tapco sks mag)

But like was said your better off buying the mags in the states and leaving them at your vacation home and keeping your pinned ones here

Buy a bunch of Magpul Pmags riveted to 5 rounds for use in Canada and when you go to the US buy some more for use there. In the US a Pmag is less than $20 since they don't charge $15-$20 for a silly rivet and someones 2 minutes to drill a hole and install it.
I've tried quite a few different brands of magazines and the Magpul Pmags have never let me down. What's best is subjective, some rifles have a tighter magazine well than others so my advice is to buy one of each of what your local retailer sells then try them, pick the one you like best and buy 20 more.
Since you've been a member since 2008 I would have though you'd have figured out by now that asking about breaking Canadian law without clarifying your intent to take them to the US would get you jumped on and create a thread de-rail.

Good luck and be careful what you say on here without providing a little more information, human nature is to jump to conclusions when information is lacking.

And , yes part of my plan is to take my guns to Maine where I spend some vacation time and plan on buying a vacation home. They do not have mag size restrictions there.

My bad. I can admit when I’ve jumped to a conclusion! For future sake I would clarify if asking a question that, on its face, would be illegal.

Canadian law prohibits any modification of mags, even re-riveting a prohibited magazine before entry. I'd avoid modifications of any kind at all. Buy 30 round mags there and leave your 5/30s here for the least amount of trouble.

Yup, if the two cent rivet gives up the ghost, you're supposed to keep the now "prohibited device" until you get arrested for possessing it. Did you read that before you pressed post?

So, I'll echo what others have said.. buy your mags south of the border and leave them behind if you want to run 30's. Same goes for ammo, I don't believe you can cross with ammo but I've never tried personally.

For up here though: PMAGs do run well. I have them in both 223 and 308, never had issues. 5 rounds goes pretty quick if you're having fun though, I prefer 10+

For 10 rounders, I have found the LAR-15 magazines seem to run the best. Lots of site sponsors sell them too (SFRC, CTCS, Questar). I also bought a few of the 10 round mags ATRS put out, I believe these are the first gen ones. They would FTF a lot! I ended up having to notch out the top of the mag because the bullet tip would catch.. seem to work OK now. I don't have any experience with the recent or colored ones.

Lastly, you have the Alexander Arms 50 Beowulf magazines! You can usually fit 13 rounds, some allow a few more depending on how they're pinned. I have had good luck with mine. I have 6 mags and only had issues with one, I can't remember what it was now that I had to #### with.. Too many rifles, too many magazines..

Anyways, hope this helps, cheers!

Thanks. Lots of great info. I just ordered some PMags 5/30.
I might be a year or two from getting my vacation place in Maine. Once I do I will definitely be buying mags there and leaving them behind.
I will be having a look at what the prices are like when I’m there this summer. I will be doing some research on what the laws are for crossing ammo. I do know in the past my bro in law was able to bring some across the border. He’s got his dual citizenship and lives in the US.

Ammo is cheaper south of the border just like everything else.
