ar-15 or any restricted cutting down barrel

Maybe this should be in legal forum but just curious... i just bought a colt 6920 and was contemplating sending it to a smith to cut the barrel to 12 or 14 and having it rethreaded .... is this ok or would i have to buy a factory barrel in that length. I know i would have to call and change the registration on it to match the barrel but not sure if its ok to do it this way, it would be much cheaper than buying a $600+ barrel.... anyone know? Im sure there is lots already on this subject but i havnt had a chance to research it. Or is the 6920 with law enforcement/ military use only marked colts to much of a collectable unit to play with? I know they demand a premium in the states.

You can get a decent barrel for $200+/- at Dlask, a really good barrel like DD for $350+/-....
Not sure what a smith would charge to cut/crown/thread/ and enlarge the gas port.....
 
Even though it is a named restricted with a short barrel, you still can not cut the barrel down not even a gunsmith, it has to be cut from a barrel blank.

•a handgun with a barrel length of 105 mm (4.1 inches) or less;
•a handgun designed or adapted to discharge 25 or 32 calibre ammunition;
•a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make it less than 660 mm (26 inches) in overall length;
•a rifle or shotgun that has been altered to make the barrel length less than 457 mm (18 inches) where the overall firearm length is 660 mm (26 inches) or more;
•an automatic firearm and a converted automatic firearm;
•any firearm prescribed as prohibited.

Each of the above criteria on it's own determines the prohibited status for a firearm, not a combination of multiple criteria .

Got a Colt M4 14.5" kit from IRUNGUNS.... Barrel, BCG, Carry handle, everything but stripped upper for $429 just a couple months ago. Keep your eyes open, or buy a DD barrel....every but as good as a Colt
 
the other option is to buy an AR-15 upper with the barrel length you want....it increases the diversity of your rifle, and you won't lose out if you ever consider selling it. an intact LE6920 will fetch a better price than a modified. just an idea...
 
Colt 14.5 barrels are still at a premium, and can be difficult to track down at times, but there are plenty of other 14.5s out there. I'd second the DD, quality is top knotch.

Is there anything in the law or regulations that states that only a licenced manufacturer or gunsmith can make a finished barrel from a blank?
 
I would like to know as well as a blank was never anything other than a drilled rod and is not model specific? I understand that cutting down a stock barrel is a no no but generic blanks?
 
If you build your own barrel from a blank, the general thinking is you can make it whatever length you want. I haven't a clue if that would hold up in court though.
