I was down town at my local sporting goods store when the topic of AR 15s came up. Two of the customers said they had read a statement saying the AR 15 is headed for the prohib list. Can this be true or is it more paranoid banter surrounding the cancelling of the long gun registry. I've read another thread on CGN regarding the CZ 858 and that rifle also came up in conversation today. I thought the death of the LGR was supposed to be a good thing. WTF over!!!

I heard dumb stuff like this at gunshops all the time - Last time when this gun shop ( which does not exist anymore BTW), the price tags of the ARs on the wall magically jumped up by a few hundred bucks.

One of the self educated customers said the reason for prohibiting the AR 15 is that it is easily converted to full auto. I argued that it could not and that the inner workings of the lower receiver and the AR bolt differ from the M16 and the AR is produced to be semi auto only. Ohh! was the reply. The chatter did cause me to flinch however considering I have about $4000.00 invested in my AR.

People in gun shops have been saying everything under the sun is going to be banned since there were first gun shops.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I work for one of the site sponsors, and I have heard nothing about the XCR/AR/858 going prohib at all.

It's all rumour. The RCMP (or elements within the RCMP) would like to have them named as prohibited firearms, but unless they meet the definition of a prohibited firearm, and without an OIC naming them prohib, they will stay NR.

Who knows what the "powers that be" have planned, before the end of the LGR?

I wouldn't put it past them to do anything!

Would you?

It would take more than an order in council for the AR15 , I believe it was Joe Clark that named the AR15 the Canadian service rifle, hence giving it sporting rifle legitimacy under the law. Otherwise it would have been on the prohib list when the Liberal's brought in C-68 so even they couldn't OIC it after the fact.

It was originally going to go prohib under C-68, but thanks to some successful lobbying, it only went restricted.

One of the criteria for prohibiting a firearm was the determination of its lack of "legitimate" sporting use. When presented with evidence that the DND (AKA: Federal Government) was not only providing ammunition for AR15's but assisting in sanctioned Provincial Rifle Association shooting events, the gov't had no choice but to back down on prohibiting the AR.

Not actually that difficult. :D Simpler than the AK, which is Prohib.
