Higher than $20 for an IWI or PMAG. I'm not expecting this to match the reliability and durability of a Swiss mag, or even one of the Chinese ones (which run flawlessly in my experience). I'm doing this for the same reason that I made my own sling for my Swiss Arms... It's an interesting project and I learn a few things by engaging in experimentation.

Ok, so the experiment ended in failure today. :(

It had issues feeding, and one of the tabs broke off. I'll reattach it and experiment with changing how it seats. I did notice there was a little play between the feed lips and the receiver. I'll see if I can tighten this up and eliminate the issues.

That's always going to be your problem, friend. Even though you might get it working in the back of your mind you'll be worrying about the reliability of a magazine in a rifle that's taking a pounding like it was in a Sasha Grey video.

That said, good luck. Nothing wrong with experimenting.

For the specific issue of the tabs shearing off, I laready had a solution before I even tested it as I knew it would be an issue with the prototype, I just thought it would last a little longer before it sheared off, and this was mainly a function test.
 
Yep, that's another possible solution.

I've also repaired my prototype and am proceeding to prepare to test it today. If it works, I'm planning on taking some video if it in action.

Chewed through about 20 rounds before one of the tabs sheared off again. This isn't a concern as I already have a fix in mind. Bolt hold open worked and no issues feeding.

What about this stock ? Not to hijack but does anyone think this will work ? I should probably just start a thread to ask I have a nea lower just piecing together what I need to make it work and seen your thread. It's pretty cool your looking for alternatives

Should work. Since you don't need a buffer or buffer spring, it should work just like any other stock with the NEA lower.

The big motivation for me is this will dramatically reduce the cost of Swiss Arms mags. Yes, there are the Chinese knockoffs that CanAm sells, but this way you can use 5/20 Pmags.

The entire thing is JB Weld...

I will note that the front one was the original one to detach, and it has been fine since I reattached it. I've also modified the front tab and the magazine so that the small rear tab is no longer necessary, and the groove for the paddle is cut in to the mag itself.

I have a solution to this problem built in to my Gen 2 prototype.
 
I'll also note that the big implications here would be being able to adapt a similar system to be able to use .308 AR mags with the FAMAE 542 rifle. These would be dramatically cheaper than the FAMAE mags, but this would only be a potential project if this initial one works as intended.

M14 mags are easy to modify the bodies to fit in a famae.
Dremel zip disk along the back of the body and reweld closed. Grind flush. Welded a little flat bar on the front and back, then cut a groove in the back for the mag catch.
I just need to get around to narrowing the spring. Function test, the. Make a shoulder or crimp to stop from seating too deep.

Unfortunately I don't have regular access to all my tools.

I was debating on making a bunch and trying to sell them. After I worked it out even if it doubled the price of the M14 mag and took me 20 mins to do each one on average, its not worth my time.
 
If it is AR mag use you are after, the best option is the NEA lower. They need a bit of work in my experience especially if you want to run an ambi mag release, but it is far better than the alternative mag well block.

Good luck with your project OP, it is a worthy endeavour none the less.
 
I wish they would make a lower using the Swiss Arms Stock as i like it. They make them, but for some reason we will never get them here. i like the feel of a swiss arms rifle with a magazine that can be used in multiple platforms

So, a little update.

I modeled the attachment tab and had it 3D printed. Assembled it today, and so far things are looking promising. It appears to be highly resistant to shearing off, and the fit in the rifle is much tighter. The real test will come some time over the next week when I take it to the range. The goal is to get 500 rounds through it without a failure. I doubt I'll be doing this in one range trip, but I'll keep everyone updated.
