What is the best ar-15 trainer available?

Ive had the .22 CMMG bolt and enjoyed it but it made my rifle very very dirty. This may end up being the best choice for me as it keeps the same rifle parts plus has 30 round mags.

The other options Ive seen are the m&p15-22 which looks great but only has 10 round mags. I have seen a chippa and ruger sr22 but not sure about the quality of those.

Any help would be appreciated

mp15-22 would be the perfect platform... if it wasn't restricted.... that's the only reason I'm selling mine. The 10rd mag thing you can get over... but a restricted .22LR gun, that's ridiculous!

What about the colt m4-22, mags aren't limited if you get the colt ones, still restricted though

I will attest the smith MP15-22 runs even cheap bulk Ammo 100%. The restricted part is a nuisance but if you’re training for Ar15 good chance you have an AR and already use a range. I’d recommend one. Few have even popped up on the ee lately.

What is the going prices for the m&p 15-22 and the colt m4-22?
Are these better than the chiappa model? It looks like you can buy just the upper for this model which would be great.

If you are "training" you should really be using the gun you are using for competition... or whatever you are training for...

so I would say conversion so your trigger is the same, weight, accessories, etc.

Or just bite the bullet and use .223 so recoil and muzzle behaviour is the same.

If it is marksmanship training, any rifle will do... buy and enjoy anything you like.

Im just trying to mix it up a little, I wouldnt be just shooting 22. But it is 1/4 the price of 223 which does have some advantage.

+1 for the M&P 15-22. It's one of the only options with a functional bolt release, which from a training perspective is essential. 10 round mags suck but from a training perspective you'll get really good at reloads.

I do agree, but the price of a new rifle can stock a lot of inexpensive .223

for switching up things, I can appreciate that... sport shooting is never a bad time.

I gotta lean toward Daver_II on this one. I use the CMMG conversion. Same trigger, optics, etc. Sure it ain't a tac driver but it's not for precision shooting. I shoot about 5 MOA with it at 100 in a 1/7".

The KRISS Defiance DMK 22C LOVA looks like a lot of fun. It's on my wish list.

Looks sweet.
1. Available in Canada?
2. NR?
3. 10/22 mags mean 10 rnd max?

I'm in the same boat as this poster. 2 guns vs 1. But with the CMMG I can fire 25 rounds. I'm so conflicted. Of course I'm leaning towards GSG-15 for one in the plink.

1.I think I run guns can bring them in.
2.I believe they are restricted.
3.They take ruger barrels, but have their own mags with last shot bolt hold open. They also have larger magazines.

Hmm this has been very enlightening.
So if I go grab a S&W M&P 15 Sport 2 I can slap on a whole upper for 22lr or CMMG conversion or if I want a funky short barrel i just slap that on? Wow ARs are awesome. (Sorry for my ignorance this is all new to me)

Yup.... Pop two pins and swap away....

Like I said before, If you intend to use the rimfire to "train" on your AR, it is best to try to approximate everything about firing your AR in .223.
So ergonomics, Trigger pull and break, weight, optic or irons, etc.

You will never be able to simulate the recoil without using .223 but you can get pretty damn close to everything else.

Be super careful though, once you start getting multiple uppers, DMR, .22lr, shorty, retro, etc.... your safe fills up quick with multiple ARs.... There breed or something.

I use a CMMG MK9, a 9mmAR external dimensions except the magazine are the same as standard AR, with 147gr bullets and no muzzle device it’s comparable in muzzle flip to a compensated 223 AR but definitely not in muzzle blast. Way cheaper to shoot, much easier to clean requires much less frequent cleaning, does not wear out steel targets like 223.
