I am assembling my first AR 15 frankengun and am seriously overwhelmed. I already have my lower so that is not the problem, my problem is upper. I have certain criteria that are:

11.5" chrome lined barrel
Noveske kx5
Spikes Bar rail 13.2"

I have already asked you guys about the KAC CQB but no one can answer my one question about the new gas block. So here is the question...... What upper is a good choice? I would like to purchase a complete upper because I don't want to get into head spacing the bolt to barrel.

If you buy quality parts from reputable manufacturers, your chances of getting headspace issues are pretty slim. I have 5 uppers that are mix and match from various parts and they all pass headspace checks with my go/no-go gauges. I've interchanged the bolts too and they all still pass.

You should be aware that in the AR, headspace has nothing to do with the upper. The barrel that you choose will in all probability be attached to the barrel extension (the piece with the chamber and locking lugs) - this is what sets the headspace.

As said before, if you buy anything but the worst quality barrel, you should have no issues. At that, even the cheapest barrels are likely to be trouble free from a headspace perspective.

a quality bolt, and a quality barrel shouldn't have any headspace issues. when I was in the reserves. The BCG's were handed out whilly nilly. We'd line up at the armory, sign out a rifle, and just pull a BCG and bolt off a shelf. If you can't interchange them, there's a problem...

I think you're making a mistake walking away from the KAC. It seems like your highest priority is the KX5, likely because it looks like a suppressor? I would go with a KAC and be open to another muzzle device. Lots of companies make blast shields now, many are quick detach making even the softest civi feel like the baddest operator. Go KAC and don't look back.

You are correct, call me an oper8or but I really like the KX5 inside the rail look. I already have a KAC 3T on my NEA (I know, I know) I still want the KAC upper and have thought about a whole rifle but don't want to get into the hassle of selling off the lower. People tell me to sell my Spikes and keep the KAC but I'm really not into the ambi controls. I am right side dominant and don't for see having to do weapons manipulation on my reaction side too often.

Any comments on BCM 11.5" barrels? and what BCG would be a good choice?
