With first AR on hand (S&W M&P spots II) and price tag on 223/556 ammo, I am thinking running 22 on AR.

there are 2 options.
a) 22 LR upper.

Chiappa AR-15 M4 Gen II Pro Upper Receiver Assembly 22 LR

b)AR conversion Kit

CMMG 22LR AR CONV KIT 3-25RD

Does anyone use either method, Pro & Con?

Neither of above? Why?

or some other suggestions?

thanks.

Either the M&P15-22 or a complete upper, 22LR are dirty and if you shoot bare lead round I would rather fowl up the 22 upper than the .223 upper.

No experience with 22 in ARs but another suggestion if you want a cheaper round that still packs plenty of power, you could look for a 7.62x39 upper and shoot cheap surplus through it. SFRC has a few different options available with 14.5" and 7.5" barrels in multiple colours ready to go with BCG on sale right now. Not to sell you on the 7.62x39 if it's not what you're looking for because there can occasionally be problems with the x39 round in ARs but I think for the most part they work just great when they get broken in.

Although what comes to mind as well is that there is cheap steel Barnaul and MFS .223 available that won't break the bank as much as mil-spec / top brand stuff.

I went with the M&P 15-22 after looking at the options out there, dedicated .22 rifle in an AR platform for $50-60 more than the conversion kit made sense and got me a whole new rifle to boot :)
So far it has been flawless, and has been on every range trip since I got it, great rifle!
