ar 180 b

A lot of guys here will slam the AR180B about being plastic and expensive, and in the next breath they will say the sub 2k is a damn good rifle....

I don't get it.

Answering a question from 2 pages ago, no I did not get mine for the low price of $1300. When I ordered from Wolverine it was suppose to be $950ish but had to wait a looonggg time. When it finaly arrived the price had jumped to $1100 and that is what I paid.

Very nice rifle, I like it. I don't have a -15 but would like one too. Probably a NEA one. Then I can compare the two. I can shoot my 180B anywhere and hunt with it. Not the -15 which is why I got it.

If the 15 were not restricted, I would have had one long ago. If we can get it de-restricted that would be great. I will still keep the 180 though even in that case.

+1

It should have stayed around $950-ish. The only reason they are $1300-$1500 now is because people keep listing them for that (used) on the EE and that's what buyers are willing to pay. A used one just sold at the Bud Haynes gun auction in Red Deer for $1350. My understanding is, they weren't imported in huge numbers compared to the SL8 and Swissarms rifles and then Armalite discontinued them so it became a supply-demand thing.
Enjoy your 180B. I thoroughly enjoy mine.

I suppose haters are gonna hate.....

I dont hate them, I just dont particularly like them.
Having said that, I am willing to be schooled on them if anyone in GVRD or Fraser Valley wants to get together for a shootsfest.

As mentioned, I have not owned one and didnt get a chance to fire the one I repaired.
I'm willing to learn if someone is willing to teach.

BTW, here is the repair of the spot-welded scope base.
DSCF1079.jpg

Drilling out the old welds, to allow for new welds.

DSCF1080.jpg

Visegrip holding base in place.

DSCF1081.jpg

New GMAW (wirefeed) spot welds.

DSCF1083.jpg

Dressing down welds with die grinder.

The end result was these welds did not hold either, so I ran two small welds about 3/4" or 20mm long along the sides of the base where it narrows down. (Narrow spot is visible in photos) That held it. No photos of this repair though.

IIRC, the owner eventually sold it, so I'm curious to hear from the new owner.

As for the posts about "if it's so crappy/inaccurate/unreliable/whatever, why do they keep getting snapped up in the EE and retailers for 140% original retail?"

Because there are a lot of people who just plain old like them>
Because anyone who doesn't have their restricted and plays a lot of C.O.D./CS/Splinter Cell ect. probably see's this as a dream gun?
Because they look similar to an M4?

I dunno, just speculating.

I'm expected to be the first guy to stand up and extoll the amazing virtues of the AR180B and why it is the greatest non-restricted rifle in Canada. Sorry guys, I'm not an XCR owner. I don't look at rifles with blinders on. :D

The AR180B is a cheaply built budget sporting rifle. It always has been and always will be. It has a lot of problems right out of the box. With some time, money, and minor fixes, it becomes a decent little sporting rifle. Not great, and definitely not the greatest combat rifle ever made.

Now, if you ask me about an original Sterling built AR180, everything changes. They are a fantastically built rifle. The rifle feels amazing! The fit, finish, and build quality of the Sterling built rifles are light years ahead of the Armalite AR180B rifles. If you ever get a chance to compare the two, you'll see just how badly Armalite dropped the ball. I haven't been able to play with a Howa rifle, but I've heard they are also pretty well made.

I have a Sterling upper I've dropped on an AR180B lower and it is a fantastic little rifle. It's getting a billet lower soon (half finished) and I'd trust my life to that rifle.
