AR-180B. Are they truly garbage or do they have their merits?

It is an aluminum AR15, rifle length, split, drop in style that I got off Ebay for $80 a few years ago. It is the perfect length to fit lengthwise between the front sight and upper receiver, I just had to make caps for both ends from aluminum with the right holes.

Will you be able to show pictures? I would love to see if I can do the same for mine ( I'm a welder and I do aluminum welding too so I think I can get it done too ) but I would love to get pictures to give a better idea how .

Midwest used to make a 4 rail handguard specifically for the 180B. Don't know if they still do, however.

When you could buy them ,the Midwest 4 way Tac Forerail was $217 US and the scope mount rail was $60.

So when you see a 180B for sale and the guy wants $1600 ,with the above ,and original furniture ,not really all that bad.

Keep in mind........I bought my first CZ858 (06) for $650 +/- from Wolverine.....(bought two)

Bought two (2) 180Bs for $1000 each (tax ,shipping ,etc.)

Like it or hate it ,where else you gonna shoot a semi (AR ..kinda) platform anywhere you want ,takes 10 rnd LAR mags ,handles like an AR, feels great ,and shoots nice ???

edit;I think the 180 shares the same trigger group as most ARs

...well.....exactly......nothing.And JR carbines don`t count ,nor do Tavors or those T97s !

NOTE; I have Tavor and 97......love `em both (although I did sell the Norinco.....)

So there you go.

Cheers

Paul T

Norinco M14s sold for $ 499.00 (bought two)

As an AR180b owner, I can say that I am fortunate to own one, and will never sell it! (thanks for a great thread to read)

BTW, the Midwest quadrail was about the same price in canadian dollars (a steal) if bought from Wolverine (special order) last year, but I believe they have been discontinued since they do not have them on their website anymore...... again, I am fortunate to own one.....and yes, I paid $1400 last year for it, and didn't even negotiated with the seller in the EE.

crap
receiver breaks after 100 rounds like wtf even keltec is better, thats really bad

xcr comes in keymod now
acr can be standard hand guard

so therefore no quadrails of afgs

Totall utter bs. Mines seen thousands of rounds and is completely fine. No issues period other than the odd jam for norincoplinko ammo.

OP, the function EXACTLY like and AR with regards to the fact that they are a semi auto mag fed .556 rifle. No their not an ar but neither is an xcr. I've owned XCR's, tavors, swiss arms, AR's and the 180b and they all do the same thing. It doesn't feel flimsy to me although like anything, don't smash it with a hammer. IDK why guys are so quick to jump on the "ITS NO AR:mad::mad::ang" train. Ye i know its not an ar15 but we have limited NR options and this is a one of them. My only reason for recommending something else would be aftermarket support (being very limited for the 180b) and the fact that I feel they are now overpriced. No issues when it comes to function or durability (again keep the hammers away from it ;) )

I had one for about a year.

I loved that fact that it was lightweight. However, the trigger from day one was terrible... felt like dragging a cinder block over gravel every time you squeezed. I replaced it with a modified Timney AR15 trigger and never looked back. The last issue, and the one I never took the patience to resolve, was it's sporadic accuracy. I was going to increase the counter bore diameter, and re-crown the muzzle, but sold it off before getting the ambition for that.

Lack of parts availability aside, I'd use one again if I had to...

I owned one for a short time and it was awesome. The only thing it was lacking was a bolt release. If I had infinite money, I would have kept it, but I've since got an XCR which I enjoy a bit more. Bought and sold mine for around 1800 (had scope and mount). A lot of people think the value is 1200, I find that a bit unrealistic, but if you can find one that low, go for it. For just the rifle, 15-1700 seems like a reasonable range in which you can sell it. But if you get to that price older gen XCRs can be found. But like the AR180b, they also have mixed reviews on the internet. A lot of it ends up being BS though. Just do your research and decide if it seems like a risk or not.

I have one. Done the stock mod and MI rail. The rail makes it heaver though, and not sure I like where the weight is either. I can return it to the stock forearm if I want though.

Several thousand rounds through it. Only problem is sometimes does not hold open on the last round.

I would definitely go for one of the original ones with a metal receiver personally, if it was sub-$1000 and STANAG compatible I see no reason why they wouldn't sell. Then again our market is so tiny it might not be worth it.

The ar180 with the metal receiver is prohibited.

The ar180b is different enough it isn't classed as a variant. But a metal 180b receiver would be nice.

i have two...never had a stoppage...found the accuracy to be above acceptable, extremely lightweight...dont really know what more you could ask for from a non restricted rifle in canada.

I had one of the original with Metal receiver sold it when I purchased my HK sl8 with g36 kit it was ok , its function was not Ar15 like in my opinion for a NR rifle it was ok , personally I liked my NR Storm in .357 sig was a useful compact farm rifle , I am thinking the JR carbine might be useful also .
The 180 never shines and I would not purchase another no regrets letting her go .

We need to convince Nodak Spud to send them our way.

We also need to convince someone to start reproducing critical parts like the bolt and bolt carrier as well.
It's proprietary to the AR180 only.
So say a lug shears off or you get a sheared bolt face, you now have a $1500 paper weight.
There are no more critical parts left anywhere for them. Armalite has some smaller proprietary parts but none of the critical ones ie bolt carrier or bolt.
That's why I sold mine in the end. I have much love for the design and the rifle. I still think it's THE best non restricted black rifle in Canada and both of the ones I owned were amazing rifles through which I shot many many rounds without issue.
But with parts very hard to non existent now, I could not keep $1500 held up in a potential paper weight if the slightest thing went wrong with it.

I wish the aluminum lowers came through.

We need to convince Nodak Spud to send them our way.

I don't understand comments like this, everyone seems to think they should be able to buy one of these rifles for $1000, reality puts them around $1500 average used price then people want to fix a rifle that isn't broken with a $500 aluminum lower.
Why not just enjoy the rifle as it is and if you are unlucky and you experience a very rare failure of the lower at the front hinge pin just buy the Stormworkz repair kit and get back to shooting?

As usual the internet has convinced people they need to spend money fixing something that isn't broken.

Perhaps some people prefer metal over plastic.
