AR 180B restricted????

Their are now two versions of the AR-180b. The original version, with the 18.5" barrel and integral flash hider, and a newer 18" version with a removable A2 flash hider.
The 18" barrel is the restricted one. In a very confusing move Armalite chose to name the new version the AR-180b and the original model is now called the AR-180b-2.
Armalite changed the configuration after the sunset on the AWB, but kept the original verssion for ban states and the Canadian market.

Hello, I'd like to ask a theoretical question regarding this. I am currently looking into those AR-180B2 and they're quite interesting. I might be interested in buying one.
My concern is that it could (and it seems likely) be reclassified as a Restricted firearm. I currently only have a PAL (and I have no incentive in getting an RPAL, the ATT system is way too much a pain in the ass for me).
So if they do reclassify it, what do you think would happen to people like me? Would I get "grandfathered" in but still have to adhere to the ATT system? Would I instantly have an illegal firearm possession???

Yeah, well, I hate to say it, but they've won on that one for me.
I might be interested in the novelty of firing handguns for a while but I know it won't last, I just don't have the interest in it, but that's just me. And then, if I do get one and a handgun, I'm stuck with a brick I can't move anywhere unless I have a special permit to go to a range and be a member of that range.... it's just too much for me...

Getting your RPAL classification doesn't mean that you have to use it. I was licensed for RPAL for a couple of years before I even bought a handgun. In this day and age, you are far better to get what licenses you can NOW.
Who knows, if by chance any firearm you own now does get re-classified later, you will still have the paperwork to continue owning it without hassle.

Back to the gun... if you can find a non-R one out there, by all means look at it and get it if you really like it. Armalite's are top-notch... one of the better name brands out there.
If you do get your R-PAL, why bother with one. For a little more you can get an AR and since it's Restricted anyway, might as well go for the real thing.

I hope you were referring to the original question and not mine, as I have read the faq a few times, and the question of what happens if it DOES go restricted isn't in there...
Is there any precedent on those kinds of things? Does anyone know what happened if you had a gun (now classified as restricted) before the law changed and made it restricted?
The only answer that seems likely in my mind is that I would be given a grace period of a few months to get all my restricted paperwork in order, and after that period if I didn't have it I would then be legally in the wrong.
