Hi all,
This is I think ammo specific, but i encountered the problem while using my Ruger AR-556 so I posted it in this section.
Went to the range today. Shot about 60 rounds in my AR.. Noticed 3 rounds of my steel cased Barnaul .223 55gr. Had split necks? The primers seem seated correctly, none of the rounds were blemished in any way, and the rounds fired all hit the target and didn't feel any different when firing.
I contacted the retailer as I thought maybe they would be able to check the lot of ammunition with manufacturer or their distributer.(waiting on a reply in a few days or so)
I'm assuming it's not my rifle as it has not happend with any brass ammo. I clean after range use and there's no fouling or anything. I have less than 400 total rounds down the pipe.
At this point it's my assumption that I'm getting the odd "hot" load as it is cheap Russian milsurp style ammo.

It's steel case ammo? It did its job the second it came out of the chamber. If it was brass cases I'd be a little worried if you were planning on reloading them. I'd keep shooting but just give rounds a once over before loading into the mag?

Steel is much less ductile than brass, so cracked necks are more likely. The neck is both the thinnest part of the case and the part that gets worked the most when the case is manufactured.

I would not worry about it.

Yes steel cased. The only reason I even noticed is because one of the split casings hit my neck and burned me when I let my buddy give my AR a try lmao! I usually give a quick inspection of the ammo as I load my mags.
