hi some of my friends were talking about how to get around the 5 round limit first there is the 10 rounds lar mags and then they also mentioned mags meant for different size chamber ars like .50 beowolf and other large diameter shells they were saying these mags are still pinned to 5 for that caliber but you could fit many more then five 5.56 rounds which is true what i was wondering on the legalities of this and what is the mag i can fit the most rounds into? and how many is that? i was under the impression i could get 18 round mags for my ar. any info on this subject would be helpful

Sorry, you are mistaken. Maximum magazine capacity for a centrefire rifle is 5. Maybe your friends were talking about rim fire magazines which do not have a limit. Is that possible?

BTW, nice 4th post.

He / She wants to re-load military cartridges fast and cheap....and know about high capacity mags "Loopholes"??. No such thing.

IF you actually HAD an AR and not just read about it online. You would have taken the Federal Safety course where you would have Learned all you need to know about Restricted firearms. Such as the 5 round Magazine capacity.

Sounds like someone doing a news article too me.

I will translate the first post

My editor and colleagues were thinking of how we could artificially conjure up some fear into the canadian society in light of a tragic event that took place in another country. Can you guys make our life easier?

thanks for being a #### i was just asking a question. and no im not some kinda anti gun reporter. rounds that fit in stanag mags in a single stack like WSSM rounds and .50 beowolf the magazines for these rounds would be pinned to 5 but but if the same mag was then used for 5.56 you could fit more then five are these magazines available and is that legal?

no. your #### will fall off.

i didn't realize that my post would be under so much scrutiny i wasn't trying to incite fear and it had no reference to the prior mentioned events never mind clearly this is to controversial

I have been wondering about this as well, I am getting a t97 and of course ar magazines fit and the lar pistol magazines are legally able to hold 10 rounds so I think his question is more along the lines of if it is legal to fully load the magazine and discharge it in a rifle platform rather than the pistol platform it was intended to be used in.

Geez, I hope so. The RCMP says we can....

Beretta 92 mags anyone? 9 & .40

9 & .40.....

You can fit 13 squares into 10 rectangles.....

Okay, that's probably pretty obscure for most around here....

Sorry.

What about my garand? It holds 8. To the OP, yes there is the LAR pistol mags that hold 10 and are legal to use in your AR. Also yes there is a lot of talk about the .50 Beowulf AR mags. These will hold around the 15 mark of .223 I believe. This is also perfectly legal to do. The laws for magazines are written for the particular firearm and caliber they are designed for, not for what they might be used in. Check out the RCMP website for this http://ww w.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/bulletins/bus-ent/20110323-72-eng.htm

The Garand is a named exception in the legislation...spared for its "historical value".

The Lee-Enfield's 10-round .303 mag is a named exception too, which is a head-scratcher since bolt-actions do not have a limit.....unless you consider that the original intentions of our overlords might have been to limit ALL magazines and the reference to the Enfield mag never got removed from the final draft.

Im aware of why the garand is allowed. it was a response to no target saying centrefires are limited to 5. My favourite one is the snail drum mag for the Luger. Perfectly legal. Just goes to show trying to understand our firearm laws is like staring at the sun. Makes your head hurt and you feel even dumber after doing it.

thank you your knowledge as well as this link are extremely helpful i was worried about purchasing lar mags or mags meant for larger rounds and using them only to be arrest and crucified by anti gun groups for my actions

You will be crucified by anti's no matter what you do. You own firearms. You are a bad person in their eyes.

Rule of thumb : If it's legal to purchase, it's legal to use.

Exception: Some provincial hunting regulations restrict magazine capacity. Read up before you go hunting.

I'm not media, just new to firearms culture. I'm very sorry that my questions were poorly timed and insensitive to the current situation, I shouldn't have asked them right now. Thank you to those who replied with facts, I have my answer.

Honestly, troll or not, this information was useful for me, since I'm just completing my AR purchase and included a few lar15 mags.

I'd make sure you have a copy of at least the special bulletin by the RCMP: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/bulletins/bus-ent/20110323-72-eng.htm Keep it with your ltatt and reg documents. The issue unfortunately that you're going to find out that at least some of the members at your range will have no idea this is even legal. You don't want to get into an arguement with someone at the range over your 'illegal magazine' -- the .50 cal mags seem to be legal as well, time will tell if it stays that way

Welcome to the sometimes VERY FRUSTRATING world of firearms regs -- but it's awesome to go out and shoot at the range, so you'll just have to grin and bare it like everyone else :)

edit: oh the main thing here is don't use the phrase "get around" makes it sound like you're trying to do something iffy.
