Is there any significant differences between the two..? Do they both have polygonal rifling? i'm getting a 14.5 " barrel, help me to figure out which one.

Only the NEA has polygonal rifling. They also use some sort of nitride finish on the exterior and interior of the barrel, supposed to be harder than chrome.

The S&J is parkerized and doesn't have chrome lining.

The biggest difference, aside from the finish used, would be the weight. S&J uses a government profile whereas the NEA offering looks to be a midweight or HBAR profile under the handguards.

I'm sure that both are good barrels but I'm very leary of adding components that increase weight for little to no benefit.

I got an S&J and love it I got the 11.5 and it gave me great groups

S&J barrels are lighter, less money and I believe the new batch coming soon are nitride finished (black though).

I saw the prototype nitride one they did early last year and it freakin rocks.

For the weight, a 14.5" NEA barrel alone weighs close to the same as a upper (KAC rail, LMT upper, gas block, tube, no BCG) with 14.5" S&J barrel.

S&J with nitride finish? Awesome. They are also looking at offering barrels with an A2 FSB in the next batch if that is a consideration for you, I know it is for me.

The barrel the OP has is a second gen S&J. Non chrome lined. All barrels in our last batch and all new ones are controled gas nitrate finish. The process we use has been perfected and we have 8 test barrels out on the market inc my own that had 5000rds. Shot mostly mfs and fed. The first 1000 rds with out cleaning.
We wanted to do a lot of testing before we mas marketed them. As well we have an overseas contract to supply ar15 barrels, nothing big like NEA just a few 100 a year.
The Gov profile is all that's needed in a carbine. No point making it heavy as its not a DMR.
We have 100,s of barrles being made from 10.5 to 16.d Mid lenght. Gas nitrate is the way foward as many are now using this, noveski ect. But it is hard to do correctly and is not cheap!!

We are really only set up to do producton. But our contract gunsmith has 30yrs working on AR15/M16,s and we will offer the F marked site tower on custom order.

Apparently what is harder to do is spell BARRELS properly. Also fwiw the process you are describing is gas NITRIDE not nitrate. :slap:

But hey why sweat the details when making precision components like rifle barrels?

Now you need to make your 14.5" in a C8 pencile profile and offer a 16" bbl option with a simulated Simon Sleeve... It's a nice market nobody seems to be exploiting and a very Canadian-specific requirement ;)

Of course, if you are buying your blanks pre-profiled, forget what I said... :(

ACTUALLY... assuming he is using the gas process, it's called gaseous ferritic nirocarburizing or gaseous nitrocarburization for short ;)

If I'm not mistaken, NEA is the other Canadian maker using an NC process and I believe they opted for salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing.

The "Cadillac" of these processes is called plasma-assisted ferritic nitrocarburizing (aka ion nitriding). It's done at much lower temperatures in the work piece and results in less chance of dimensional alteration. It also works better on stainless steels than the other two processes. I don't think this process is being used by any barrel suppliers in Canada, though I suspect some US makers may have adopted it - it's been rumoured the CMMG "WASP" NC treatment is of this type.

But now we're splitting hairs... lol.

I'm looking forward to getting a good 16" Mid-length barrel for a long... time. Please let me know when is availble, thanks :)
