AR bolt carrier group

Okay, I'll probably get clobbered by the AR gurus for asking a dumb question but hear it goes:

I 'm researching into building an AR and I noticed that bolt carrier groups can either be SA or FA (semi-auto/ full auto?) and I was wondering if there is any advantage in choosing one over the other. Or does SA/FA mean something completely different? Are there any manufacturers that should be avoided? Any advice or hints would be appreciated.
 
full auto carrier has a slightly longer rear bearing surface that contacts the auto sear/disconnector. In the USA the same as an MG, in Canada, no biggie just parts

None, its a novelty. Unless you have a gov't lower with all the auto hammer, sear, trigger, selector or one of those drop in auto sears that fit in a civilian (AR15)lower...and a good lawyer. Not worth a fifty buck increase in price.
 
Go with the full auto BCG's they make a huge tactical difference in the AR15, just think "Bad A$$" lol. and when SHTF if you come accross a Full Auto Lower just swap the uppers and you're GTG. No not a dumb question please feel free to ask more.
 
FA bolt carrier has more metal mass, therefore it's slightly heavier and therefore increasing the lock time with the bolt and chamber causing a slight increase in accuracy. just remember you need a special buffer too.
 
You don't need a special buffer. The only real difference in a semi auto gun is the weight is a bit more with the FA carrier. Only an advantage if you want that weight. You can also change buffer weights to go heavier.
 
Nah. Remember, the FA carrier is the original design. The SA carrier was a lawyer's invention. It simply exists to prevent tripping the auto sear (should one be in the lower).

:p and if your SHTF scenario brings you accross a FA Lower, I bet there would be odds of it already having one:p

yeah, what he said. i was refering to a heavy buffer but then again i'm an accuracy freak and want as much lock up time as possible to ensure the bullet has left the barrel before things start moving inside. my personal preference.
 
Some guys want the extra weight in the carrier ( example Tubbs Carrier Weight System, Young Manufacturing NM carriers etc )

Currently , the best deal going is Questars where a M-16 carrier is only $10 more than AR-15

In some instances the M16 carrier is LESS money ( DPMS at Brownells ) . Go figure. When I need a cheapo carrier I buy the DPMS M16

No clue why people think M16 carriers are $50 + more

Having said that, I can't think what the downside would be.
 
It is not a bearing surface. If it was it would wear shiny.

As for increasing accuracy, no. Reliability, no. Any advantage in a semi rifle, no.

However it causes no harm and it is your money.
 
I know they say the F/A is better for short barrels, but.....

I've used both extensively, the only difference I can determine, is that the F/A carrier is slightly tougher to get the firing pin out of for cleaning. :D
