I am in the market for my first AR and have 900-1300 to play with. I have researched and looked at AR on the market but I am looking for experince with there own and what they recommend in my price range. I am looking for a rifle that will not require as many upgrades for the price Im am going to spend. What do you suggest and where is the best place to purchase it. specifically looking for a gun that will give me a ok trigger, forward assist, case deflector, mid length gas block that will be able to accomdate a free float hand guard if the gun does not come with one, hammer forged barrel that has been melonite coating or milspec parts.

No sure if a gun at this price exist or where I can purchase one but would like to here any suggestions.

IMG_0376.jpgI kinda like this, you can add whatever handguard and stock, you like.

A bit over your budget though, once you factor in the handguard and stock.

I can't think of a single hammer forged barrel that has melonite. I've been wrong before though.

For your budget I'd consider PSA from Irunguns

The deal...

Windham rifle Ar15 formerly bushmaster..pretty reliable good quality..... lifetime warranty. my first restricted rifle

I don't have six AR 15s, I have two. First one is a WW. Second is an Armalite M 15 Competition. I like both of them. $1400 of green difference in cost. Is one a nicer gun feature wise? Yup. Is one more impressive to look at? Yes. Does one shoot better than the other (MOA)? No,not by me anyways. Does the WW need more features? No. But I did add an Ergo grip (<$40 from Brownells). Took the WW out to the range two weeks ago and played from 50 to 200 yds. More gun than I am shooter and the value is in your wheelhouse. Highly recommended! AR 15s are spectacular, I hope that you get one and soon!

Not sure if these are still available in Canada. I saw a few at Reliable Gun a while ago. They are in the $900 range.

I'd personnaly get the S&W sport 2 and spend the balance of the budget on ammo

:agree:

I had an M&P Sport, it was a nice rifle, if the Sport 2 is the same quality you'll not do much better within your budget (unless a lifetime warranty is a must). The current deals on Sport 2's will leave you enough in your budget for other stuff, if not ammo then a half decent optic.

This is the route I went as well, (WW15) and I'm very happy I did. Solidly made rifle, works great "out of the box".

Over time, I've replaced all the furniture. But that's based on personal preference. Everyone is different, and no matter what you get, there's a good chance you'll swap out the butt-stock, handguard, pistol grip. But as opposed to getting a "stripped" gun, the furniture that comes with the WW will suit you fine while you figure out what you want to do.

The stock trigger is nothing to write home about. At the same time, my motivation to swap it out is low... Almost 4 years in, and it's on my "get around to it" list.

Why re-invent the wheel? Go with the flavor of the month S&W Sporter II! For under $700, you get most of your wish list covered.
You won't find an awesome trigger at your price range. Even a DD rifle has a gritty mil-spec trigger.
Only add on I would do is a medium price range RDS, a sling attachment/ sling of your choice, maybe some Magpul stock/grip, a Raptor charging handle and a flashlight. This will bring you past your budget but do it slowly as money comes in.
Nice trigger packs are expensive but worth it. Also a muzzle brake if you plan on fast running and gunning competitions.

The other option, as someone else mentioned, is get a used rifle that has some of the above options already included.

I'd deffidently shop used to get the most bang for my buck.

If you don't plan on traveling to the states, don't discount the norinco m4 copies. I've owned one for years, thousands of rounds down range and never a hiccup. They can be had cheap, leaving left over budget for an optic, rear BUIS and anything you want to upgrade.

I agree with the sport 2. And you can go with ammo or goodies for the rifle. I went with the goodies. This is my setup that cost me about $1,300. Very accurate rifle, and Cabella's has them for $620 right now.

M&P 15 Sport Gen 2
As mentioned above it's a good rifle for the current price. Cabelas has ordered a batch of rifle however their arrival date is unknown (should be within the next two months). If you pay 620 + GST you got enough room to improve the trigger (get Geissele), add some furniture (Magpul) and put a red dot (holosun or vortex) on it.
Alternative go with a Springfield Armory SAINT AR. Has a very good trigger, tension screws, good looking furniture and a Melonite treated barrel (inside and out).

buy one and run it... M&P sport, or Armalite M15 would be my choice.

But ultimately I would recommend anything but NEA.

Having owned a few, including BL, COLT, Armalite, NEA, OMNI, LMT, WW... I would buy any of them but NEA again.
