AR Buffer spring seems chunky

I just noticed this issue

pull back the charging handle, the bolt moves rearward smoothly, until about half way, then I hear my buffer spring make "springy" noises, and the action goes from smooth to shunky, as if there was sand in there...

my AR is CLEAN - mil standards. I cleaned the spring again, buffer tube etc, oiled it a bit more, and the issue is still present.

It fires fine... no issues there, even when firing at a higher rate.

I'm trying to focus and remember if this is normal, or?

again, when the buffer moves rearward, it just seems off, not as smooth as when it starts to move... its just noticably unsmooth. (unlike keystone light... the beer that is always smooth)

AFAIK its normal for the AR, you might have a sharp edge on the tip of the spring which is scratching the inside of the tube, other then that its the normal sprooing of the AR.

A sharp ridge can also be present if the buffer end cap retaining pin is not flush.
I greased my buffer spring in a shorty - very quiet now, no standard spring sproing anymore

__________

Normal? the sharp edges getting in the way - or the "springy noise that seems a bit excessive?

the 5-6 C7's I've fired all had a "springy" noise from the buffer spring that I could hear when firing, even over the ear protection. It drove me nuts...

Yeah, the good old C-7's do have that spring sound, as to why it was a little shunky, see if you have another buffer spring or the buffer plug to swap out to test.

Another thing is, what do you use for cleaning and lube?

If you're in the military, I'm guessing you're using break-free CLP?
And if you remember... CLP has some small particles in the mix and if you pour that into the buffer it could have adverse effect if you don't wipe it clean.

I think it might be the spring getting hooked up on the buffer itself, then when the energy stored in the spring is able to overcome the buffer it "springs-chunky".

Normal... you can try flipping the spring around on the buffer as the other side might be a better fit.

If it's a brand new rifle, i.e. brand new spring, it'll sound like that for a little bit. Put more rounds down range and break it in.

yep Arty here - I do use CLP - lately I've been out in the rain so I've been running my AR a bit wet, BIT, no dripping - you're right about CLP chunks - I'll dry out buffer tube, check for scraps, and flip over the spring...

its just weird, the first half of the movement rearward is silkysmooth, then the last half is shunky

I'll keep on it
