ETA: I think I understand. You're talking about a little piece of red rubber correct? If so, you can trim to fit. Most guys I know who use them simply force fit the upper to lower until the take down pin fits. FWIW the red buffer does nothing for accuracy. It eliminates the play between upper and lower, thats about it.

fits near your take down pin and keeps upper section snug and tight against lower
 
It makes a better fit in the bottom of the junk drawer. It puts unnecessary tension upper and lower receivers and can actually do some pretty significant harm to the rifle if the receiver extension is pushed out of alignment with the travel direction of the bolt carrier.
 
Junk drawer.....too small for a good doorstop....They put those bloody things in the C7A2s and I have noticed no improvement in accuracy or stability or what ever the accu-wedge was designed for.....What I do notice is it's a PITA to operate the rear take down pin!
