AR build for 3 Gun, Thoughts ? Help ?

I am thinking of putting together an upper for 3gun and was looking at getting some ideas and pointers on barrel lengths/makes/ forends and availability of parts. I have built a few uppers in the past ,but they were mainly used for CQB guns. Was thinking about a 14.5" bbl upper but would like some opinions from those who know better than me.

I personally use a full size AR with a Rifle length gas system. Very soft to shoot, follow up shots are easy and fast in a variety of positions.
I have never done a shoot where that extra length hampered my speed at all.
(Started with 10", went to 16", finished with 18")
I am sure lots with argue with that, I am merely stating my .02

Building is fun and I would recommend it for all as it is big kids lego. But that rifle/price is a good deal.

ATRS can get you any match barrel you like. Im sure some of the other vendors will pipe up soon.

I have thought about the Stag 3G but as it stands now, I really don't need another complete rifle, just an upper that I can swap back and forth between CQB and 3gun as the lower I want to use is all set up with good trigger and stock.
 
Barrel I would imagine is going to cost you around 500 for a match grade 16" 223Wylde.
Try any of the "Precision Shooters Gunsmiths" See if they can pair a bolt with it too.
Foreguard I like the Sampson Evo. I think you can get them for around 200-250ish which is a bit cheaper then the JP ones.

BCG and Upper rec ..... ewwwwww, I don't think I am going to touch that one. Sure others will chime in there.
 
You can snag a Rainier select match from Oneshot for $300, more than enough for 3-gun. I ran a 14.5 with a midlength gas system for last two seasons. Just ordered a 16" midlength Rainier to change it up. Have a Samson Evo rail, liked it, but got a deal on a Noveske NSR. Evo is gonna go up for sale soon. Make sure to put a hand guard on it that is nearly as long as your barrel. It will help you to both get you hand out front nice and far and give you a good support shooting through barricades like a nine hole wall. It aids you in keeping your barrel off of the barricade without having to stick 5-5 inches of barrel through to get a rest. Go slim on the handguard, fits through barricades better and gives you a better grip.

Low pro gas block so your hand guard fits over it. Compensator for faster follow up shots, I like my lantac dragon, but my older PWS FSC556 did a great job too.

BCM makes a REALLY nice super slim keymod handguard for about $300. you can get it at Tier One Armoury in Edmonton.
 
I'm considering building a similar rifle to what the OP is suggesting. Was thinking vltor stripped upper (no forward assist), DD bolt, and debating between a 16" midlength or 18" rifle barrel in 223 wylde by WOA from brownells.

Any experienced 3 gunners notice a huge difference between the 14.5/16" in a midlength vs a 18" with a rifle system?
 
As far as accuracy and being able to hit what you need to in most 3gun, the barrel length doesn't matter (I hear some guys shoot stateside to 300+ meters, so if that is a factor, I'd probably go 16" & + in length).
Length and weight will matter mostly with respect to the shooter's size and stature, as will the gas system (most carbine length gas guns and especially 10-12" barrelled guns are a touch more 'violent' and 'blasty' than a mid-length and rifle length system due to the dwell). Compensators/muzzle brakes have their value with respect to muzzle climb and recoil management, but they can come with some draw backs too (kicking up dust, and re-direction of blast).
I think a 16" ish mid length gased system is a good all-rounder, but pick what you prefer, not what people are necessarily favouring.
 
For 3-Gun reliability is paramount. 300+ is going to be infrequent compared to shorter distances, in the U.S. anyway. 16" barrel or a 18" straight or M4 profile with full length gas system should work reliably.

Comps are really nice. With an adjustable gas block you can make it a very flat shooting gun.

Remember you'll also be dumping it in a barrel so choose your sights or optics with this in mind.

Im building a 3 Gun rifle with going to the USA in mind for local matches.

So I'll have a 14.5" and 16.5".

Is a stainless match barrel really needed or am I fine with another Daniel Defense barrel?

I would rather sink funds into quality ammo and eventually a trigger vs. a barrel.


For the OP, Steve at Armseast can get the Stag 3G upper in for your projected budget price.
 
If you step up to an 18", go rifle length gas system. 14.5 or 16 go mid-length. The stag 3-g is a great purpose built package. Look at it. Start there change what you feel like down the road. If it was available when I started, I wouldn't be 2700 into mine now;)

Gotta get the lower too though, it has a Giessele trigger in it.
