I see that the Stag rifles use 16" barrels with a short gas system. Can the barrel be chopped and threaded to get a 14.5" without working on the gas system?
There are 3 gas system lenghts (not counting pistol AR's)
1- Short, used with barrels: (10.25", 11.5", 14.5", 16")
2- Mid, (16")
3- Long, (18.?", 20", and everything greater)
As you can see it is quite flexible.
If you want to keep the standard design lengths between the gas port and muzzle, then you go with the following gas system:
1- Short, barrel 14.5"
2- Mid 16"
3- Long 20"
The longer the barrel the higher the velocity achieved.
The farther the gas port from the chamber the smoother the operation and less stress on the components.
The mid 16" has been qualified as the best compromise for velocity, smootheness and size.
