ar cleaning

Finally I got my Bushmaster out. I shot forty rounds before it started to rain.

Do I need to take the bolt assembly apart after so few rounds for cleaning, or would a barrel cleaning and wipedown suffice?

And yes I did a search.

Pat,

You're not at the 'need to strip the bolt' stage yet (Kevin B without a doubt, is!). Give her a splash of CLP on the bolt and barrel if you wish and leave it be. Any carbon will sweat loose, and you'll maintain rust prevention, just put a swab through the barrel before you shoot next and you're good to go.

The CF typically overcleans its weapons to the point of damaging them.

Jesus Kev, I though mine was bad.... I haven't cleaned mine in 1 - 2 years, Well the wpn itself only the bolt/mags, whatever they see.

Agree cleaning is over rated

Is that rust on the bolt carrier key, cam pin and gas tube? Or is it primer sealant?

What kind of AR is it and does it function reliably? What kind of ammo did you put through it?

What kind of bolt is that? never seen that outer groove on locking lugs before.

Its a LMT Enhanced Bolt (Gen1)
Ammo was IVI 98 C77 for 1200rds and Winchester XM193 for the rest.
Rifle flew coast to coat w/o being cleaned and was locked up for 10 days prior to me being able to get it and clean it.

If it started to rain, getting some oil on it sooner rather than later is a *good thing* for the long term condition of your rifle.

I would suspect that taking the handguards off to wipe some oil on the barrel, and pulling the bolt out for at least an exterior wipe-down would be a good idea.

(Yeah, I've fired 2500 or so rounds without cleaning either...just to see if it could do it. No problems at all.)
