Hi All,
I want to put a comp NOT flash suppressor on my 14.5" AR.
Well versed in pistol comps, not so much in AR's. I have a JP comp on my 18" AR and it seems to work pretty good, though I am told there are "better", the JM and MRE's have come recommended. WTF is a "tactical" compensator btw? I don't need or want some spiral gyro with spikes on the end of it. Just blown away by all the marketing and bs in the AR world.....ok rant off. Your best AR compensator recommendation...go!

It depends on what you are looking for out of it and what in particular you'd like to achieve.

There is a balance between muzzle blast that the shooter feels and recoil. Are you after recoil reduction at all costs or a balance?

I'm actually checking out the VG6 Precision Epsilon 5.56 break / hider.

Reviews seems really good, videos of its recoil reduction as well as control. Fairly priced as well.

For pure recoil reduction the Precision Armament M4-72 is great as is their M11 brake. The M4-72 is by far the most effective I've tried including the miculek and many more high dollar brakes but comes at the cost of a bit of back-blast at the shooter. The reverse angle on the fins of the brake is so extreme that you feel hot air.

Both top of class brakes

The Truth About Guns did a series of articles testing a load of muzzle devices (see link to 2nd article of the series) including most if not all of the brakes mentioned by previous posters. In terms of pure muzzle brakes (in fact, of all muzzle devices) the Precision Armament M4 72 came out on top.

Another take from the Precision Rifle blog (more directed towards PRS shooting) tested ability to stay on target as the highest priority rather than recoil reduction, noise, etc. and found the JP Recoil Eliminator was the most effective.

From a personal perspective, I found the Precision Armament brake lived up to its billing but the amount of blast made it unsuitable for anything but running and gunning.

It's a balancing act literally, it depends on the balance of your gun, and the style of your shooting (positional, rapid, CQB, bench, indoor, etc)
If you get the wrong one you can potentially:
Cause too much muzzle dip,
Not enough and still have muzzle rise,
Annoy the heck out of the next shooter for no reasons,
Etc etc.

Compensators and muzzle brakes can be quite different with many compensators adding ports to provide a downward "push" on firing. Depending on your gun and your hold this could be just right...or not. As a result, some recommend a pure muzzle brake that tries to reduce recoil alone, leaving you to train to manage the effects of the residual recoil effects.

What's a jr comp? Like just right carbines?

I run a miculek. Works great, especially since it was around $50 Canadian. The insite heathen is awesome if you're looking for high end Canadian made.

Pretty much any 'gill' type brake does the trick. The stag 3g comp works way to well, the muzzle ends up being blown below poa. But, that said, I could sell it to you. Lol.

And forgot to add, by gill brake, full gill brake like the miculek. There are half gill's made in canada, and they work, but not as well as the full ones.

Where did you get a JM comp for $50 CDN?
Other intel on what is available in Canada at the moment?
Thanks for all the info - looking forward to the DDM4A1 sporting something new in the near future.

Brownell's.

Bought it a year ago. Maybe it's gone up, but not by much I think.

If you dont mind the noise and muzzle blast, the JM brake does an excellent job of reducing muzzle climb on my 14.5" AR.

I also run an NEA crusader on a 10.5" which is almost as good as the JM brake.

Both are obnoxious at indoor ranges.
