Hey guys,

I'm from Quebec and I'm looking for a place where I could get some training for using my AR. I'm looking for a course that would train me in the proper use of an AR, from acquiring a target, to aiming, to shooting. It would be cool if it had a pistol component as well, but that's not a necessity.

I have always wanted to learn how to handle my weapons properly and just going to an indoor/outdoor range doesn't really seem the best way to do it.

Thanks in advance!

Check out the offerings at Phase Line Green Tactical perhaps or the ORA CQB program (clinics etc) but they are held at Base Borden, north of Toronto so it's a bit of a hike for you. Great intro to fundamentals.
PLG will be closer as they teach close to Brockville but I don't know if Earl offers a basics course like you are asking for. Google them and see.

Tactical Teacher also puts on clinics in Petawawa from time to time. The are geared towards ORA CQB, but it is great for beginners too.

I am not sure where in Quebec you are, but if you want to come to the Brockville/Prescott area sometime, I can give you a bit of a baseline.

I should have mentioned I'm from Montreal. But I'm willing to drive 2-3h max to a range.

Memnoch, i would have liked to go.. but I'm out of the country from the 5th to the 15th, so I'll be missing a few events and courses.

There's also the problem of obtaining an ATT, I'm not sure how that works... do I have to obtain an invitation from a club and submit that to the CFO ?

ATT are quite easy:

If you are a FQT member, the transport is covered by your regular ATT since this match is FQT sanctionned.

If you're not, simply print the invite letter. Fax it / E-mail it to the CFO with your ATT form, and you can receive a E-mail/fax reply with ATT within the same day if needed.

See you next year then.

(Sorry for the late reply)

Hi memnoch, no I'm not a FQT member, is it worth it to become one?

Also, these matches seem really cool, but I've never had any formal training for this type of target shooting (hence the thread). How does one usually get into it?

Also... Is there any other name for this type of target shooting, cuz CQC/military is kind of a misnomer...

Well said. A comp is a comp. Military training... Well join the CF and start from there.

The word "instructor" is like "tactical"... Overrated and overused.

I totally agree with you, now that I've researched the topic a bit more, the proper term I should have employed is "action shooting".

Action shooting is a lot different than tactical. Action shooting is all about punching holes in paper/cardboard and knocking down steel plates. Tactical is about punching holes in and knocking over the bad guys  I don't see myself going to war any time soon (or ever), so I'll stick with action shooting tyvm ;) Also heard good things about Farmboy's pistol course, but don't know anyone who took his carbine course.

I am a member of CRAFM , and ST-Jaques le Mineur , both as lot's of black gun's member i am sure one of us can give you the basic!

i did like you and take a course Awesome guy in BC!

Becoming FQT member is a personal thing. The main advantage being not needing an ATT every time you attend a competiton. I suggest doing your own research and then decide for yourself.

To compete in the match, you do not need to be specialy trained. You only need to be able to manipulate safely your rifle / Pistol. My advise is go to the range and practice lots of mag changes with pistol and rifle.

That match has this name because of its roots, it is derived from a military match and shooting is performed whitin 35M. But this is really is a civillian match for sporting purposes.

Lots of police officers and military pers are attending lots of civillian matches like IPSC, PPC, / 3 gun etc... First, they are lots of fun. Second, every fired bullet is good training regadless of context.
