does anyone make a block off for the forward assist on an ar? like ifi take out the forward assist can i some how cap it?

There are uppers that do not have FA on them "Vltor ....."

I do not understand why you would want to take it off???

Or you could just remove the pawl from the plunger. The hole would be filled, but the foreward assist would be non-functional.

i am doing a build and i dont really wanna buy one i never use it on other guns i have. just thought maybe could cap it off so at least dirt wouldent get in there.

I would maybe reconsider your build - there are manufacturers that have slab uppers with no FA (as mentioned) but most AR's still have the FA. Basically it will be easier to pick one type or the other based on what you want/ want to spend.

In terms of resale you probably want to either do it the right way or not at all, but thats just my opinion.

NEA "slick-side" upper receiver

I would just not use it, but its really a matter of personal preference. If you are doing your own build, you might as well get the reciever that doesnt have one instead of cannibalizing a perfectly good upper.

Slight newb thread detour: if you were to get a slick side upper and encountered a bolt issue, what are your options? I've been learning as much as I can about ARs in the last couple weeks on my way toward a build and the forward assist issue seems ambiguous -- most people never use it, but you'd "need" one to clear a bolt malfunction. I guess I'm unsure what kind of malfunction that would be, if jams can be cleared by working the charging handle.

YOU RACK THE CHARGING HANDLE.

The only real time you'd want to consider trying to fix a jam by hammering the FA is if someone is shooting back at you and your clearance drill failed.

forcing the bolt closed usually only causes the errant debris to further jam your cartridge into the chamber wall and often still doesn't fully close the bolt.

It really is a feature of last resort when the lead is flying.

I would just put in a FA unless you have a slab side upper. It wouldn’t be worth to trouble for me… plus it is a little odd.

I leave mine open... Stripped uppers without a FA are often more expensive, the plugs cost money, the FA without the plunger adds weight i could leave off (On ULW builds), etc...
