"AR" in AR-15

Today at work a friend of mine and i got in an arguement over what "AR" stood for. I always thought it was "ARmalite rifle". he thinks its assault rifle. Does anyone have any input?

I always though it stood for Armalite Rifle, but after seeing Armalite pistols with the designation AR, I learned that it's apparently derived just from ARmalite.
