I'm having issues with my AR15. The bolt is not consistently holding open on firing the last round in a mag. I tried cleaning and lubing which seemed to help, but consistency is still not 100%.

I ran it through a series of single round and two round mags (about 100 rounds in all) and ended up with about an 80% success rate. I checked to see if it was a mag issue but the problem did not seem to be associated with any particular mag.

If the issue is cleaning/lubing (and I suspect it is as the rifle has always worked well until now, and the round count is only 1000 or so), what areas should get particular attention?

So far I've taken apart the bolt, cleaned and lubed it, cleaned the upper receiver and wiped down the lower. I tried lubing the bolt catch and that seemed to offer some improvement as well.

Ideally I'd like the rifle to function as reliably and consistently as my Beretta Storm does ... ;)

Any suggestions?

If lubing the bolt catch seemed to help, I'd continue to check that. Maybe seperate the upper/lowers, lube the catch and spend a few minutes manually moving it, might be some thicker anodizing still needing to wear down a bit. Just a thought.

Normally that problem is associated with mags (weak springs) or the mag not properly lock it. You mentionned the bolt catch, the problem could be there but your AR is almost new. Have you check the mag release button and assembly? Could be in that area

I had the same problem with my Armalite M15 A2, no matter what magazine i was using. In my opinion, if the magazine spring is strong enough to properly feed bullets into your rilfe, it is not a magazine issue.

I took the hold open device apart from the rifle, cutted one turn of the spring and reassembled the whole thing. Seems like the original spring was too strong, my rifle worked flawlessly since.

Thanks for the input so far guys ...

Just a thought ... could this be a gas tube issue?

How often do you guys clean this part of the rifle?

Since I replaced the pop rivets in my magazines with a bar anchored on the base plate that runs up through the middle of the spring and stops the follower at 5 1/2 rds, I have never had a problem with my mags since. It takes a while longer to block the mag, but far more reliable than a mag with a pop rivet inserted in the back.

Never.

If you've eliminated the mags, have you eliminated the ammo? Are all the problems with one brand/load?

I believe I've sorted out the problem, and its the operator!:D

Thanks to all for their time and assistance ... :)

Here's what was happening:

I am in the habit of holding the rifle by the lower receiver with my left hand. I find this offers a more secure and steady purchase when firing off hand. Unfortunately, I was allowing my thumb to rest on the bolt release when firing the rifle. Once I sorted this out, all was well for 50 straight rounds.

The fix was remarkably easy once the problem was identified, but bad habits can certainly mess you up!
