Just wondering if I still have to update and my AR Registration Cert if I change my AR barrel length from 7.5 to 12.5?
I'm thinking with a longer barrel less babies and unicorns will be slaughtered by this evil rifle the devil has given us.
I hate waiting for mail but if I have to I have no choice....:(

Not with an AR upper. You can buy one without producing a PAL because it is not a firearm until it is attached to a registered lower.

But if I use a different upper do I have to change the certificate? Its confusing as they ask you the length of barrel when your AR is complete and send you another certificate.

With any permanent change (longer then 30 days) to the caliber or length of barrel you have to call it in. Otherwise most of us with AR15’s would only have stripped lowers registered.

Check the conditions on your registration certificate. It doesn't mention anything about reporting changes in barrel length if it doesn't impact legal classification. Changing caliber or modifying a frame/receiver so that it can discharge ammunition must be reported.

There might be the regulation somewhere that requires reporting changes in barrel length, but I can't think of where it is at the moment, and I just double checked the standard conditions on registration certificates and it definitely isn't there.

The nice lady on the phone in Moncton told me - twice, I 'active listened' her - that I should build my stripped lower with my shortest intended barrel, because after that I could put a longer upper on without having to call it in again. Put a 10" barrel on it the first time, and then anything longer and I'm good to go.

Your call-in results may vary, of course. This is Canada, after all.

Of course, I am still waiting for my stripped lower to arrive in the mail. Apparently my vendor (no, I won't say who) accidentally shipped it to someone else, but they are getting it back 'right away' and sending it to me post-haste...this is Canada, after all.

I've just been through this (after seeing a previous thread), I bought and registered a lower, and on the registration certificate, it was just that, a lower, no barrel length. I phoned them and needed to tell them the shortest barreled upper I have. ( i mentioned to the lady that I had multiple uppers in various lengths, and she said they use the shortest one.) 2 weeks later I received a new certificate in the post with the barrel length on it. Rather be safe than sorry.

Seems like shortest length would be the safest. The lower is at 7.5inches under the current certificate. If I were to swap uppers around to a longer one I would be safe.
