i wasnt thinking practical, i was thinking more artwork, with nice inlaid brass fittings with a 1700 feel, some nice engraving like you see on old custom flintlocks etc, perhaps even a hinged magazine plate rather then a detachable one

it would be great to use as a poster for ARs as nice friendly hunting rifles, rather than scary baby killers

Actually yeah, (as another poster said) some laminated hardwood with 4 or 6 brass sheets in the sandwich to add some nice flair and some strength for the pin holes.

Would actually look pretty nice if you spent a lot of time on the finishing!

What was going on in his head when he decided to waste all this effort and time using a chunk of pine? Cool concept, though.

He never intended to use the wood lower. He milled it out as practice before milling the aluminum one.
