hey, i was foolin around with the ar today, and after everything i have a tiny little spring with about a 40 round count and my pin to hold the upper inplace, like the first pin you'd remove.. closest to the stock is very loose sort of, falls out of place, i see it has a little slot in the back of it, that the spring almost fits in, but whats goin on here?

For future reference, it helps us out a lot if you use the proper terminology.

If your takedown pin is falling out of place, it means it is not being properly retained by the takedown pin detent. The spring you have sounds like the takedown pin detent spring. Both the takedown pin detent and its spring slide into a hole at the very back of the lower receiver, and are retained by the buttstock on a rifle, or by the receiver end plate on a carbine. If you had your buttstock off the gun, your spring and maybe the detent itself have fallen out, and can no longer hold the takedown pin in place.
