So,

I was caught with several Colt Canada lowers and lower parts kits when the ban was announced. With Covid time on my hands, I am thinking of putting them together as a project.

I watched a few vids and it doesn't seem to hard. One fella only used punches, the other used all that and a vice with mag block. Seemed to go smoother for him as it freed his hands.

So my question is ...

What tools do I need to make this easy on myself and if needed is a small vice from Walmart and a old 30 rds mag good enough for the build? Or do I have to get a substantial vice and a actual mag block?

Should say I do live in a apartment, so the work space is small at best.

Look forward to hearing any useful tips and information.

Thank you,

A vice and mag block are certainly not required.

Punch, needle nose pliers, and a small hammer are required. Maybe some duct tape to avoid scratches.

Kitchen table should suffice for a work area.

Find a good pdf that explains each step. An illustrated parts diagram helps.

It is not a complicated process but have a plan to catch the flying springs and such!

where were you three years ago with this idea when I needed it...? I put mine together without a vice etc. Wrapped pliers/pinchers in electrical tape, punch etc. There are some good YouTube vids that give you step by step instructions.

It is not at all a difficult project. There are only 2 tasks that pose risks of screwing up. I suggest you do them first.

1- Installing the triggerguard and pin. The little tabs that house these holes must be fully supported so they do not absorb the impact of driving the pin or they stand a very high chance of breaking, ruining the receiver for standard triggerguards.

2- Installing the bolt catch pin. Very little chance of breakage, but it can be frustrating getting into that position and dents, gouges and marred finish around the hole is common with amateurs.

Build in a clear garbage bag when it comes to exploding springs part

Brilliant, simple, and cost effective ^^ I like this ^^^

I've only done one AR, if I had only thought to do this instead ordering 2 of every spring on my order from TNA.
Especially true for the the pivot pin detent spring.... that was actually 2 orders of 2. Fourth time was the charm !

I think now, my only concern is what to do with my sausage fingers and small springs and detents? Defiantly utilize the genius clear bad idea. LOL

the hardest part of an AR lower is dealing with our completely out of control government and the pivot pin detent and spring.

this trick is the key to the pivot pin install:

the key to the gov problem is well, should be self explanatory at this point.

Get one of these. Buy it right now! Best tool I've ever bought for AR15 assembly. The front detent is the only really difficult part of the assembly process.

Real Avid front detent pin tool. Can also be found at Cabela's, I think.

I am certainly glad I asked the question. Outstanding information. Love the front detent pin tool and will be ordering one. I didn't think the assembly would be that difficult, I just new that, the likes of all you, could give me potential tips to make my life easier. And I am grateful, although I am sure I will loose my temper a few times in the process LOL
