AR newb here, what to get?...

I would check the EE for any upgrade parts and wait for a good deal. You will need a set of punches a rubber mallet, an AR armorer's tool and an upper reciever block with a vice. Watch some YouTube videos on barrel swaps. Also might need a low profile gas block if you are going past the FSB.
 
Good starter punch, a tapered punch. Hammer MAYBE a dremel to cut the FSB off ( they can be that much of a PITA ) Then a good barrel wrench and a good action block. Look at one that clamps the barrel.

Easier and cheaper just to get 2 piece railed handguard.

Sorry cannot help you there, being I never owned a AR15 that had handguards. Well other then issues C7 and C7A2s. Hopefully someone else can chime in. Just the cost of the tools you need and some times you need to cut these norc FSB off, cheaper and easier to get railed handguards.
 
Tactical Ordnance had some Troy Industries quad rails that they were clearing out. Not sure if they're all sold out but might want to give them a shout.
