Hey guys quick question for you, hope someone can help..

Went to the range today with my M&P AR15. I have had the gun a year and have only shot .22 in it with a conversion kit because .223 isn't allowed at my range..

I daycarded at another range today and finally shot some .223 through it.. Every time i would pull the trigger, the gun would fire but the round wouldn't extract and the trigger wouldn't reset. I would have to manually rack the charging handle, which reset the trigger, ejected the round, then could fire again.

The range wasn't busy so one of the guys took it apart and cleaned it a little, he said the extractor looked a little dirty. However that didn't fix the problem, still one round at a time..

One of the other guys came over and said that maybe all the .22 ammo clogged the gas tube and there isn't enough gas blowing back to cycle the bolt..

Anyone have any ideas? does that sound right? i don't really want to take it to the gunsmith, want to try fixing it myself.. This was with factory MFS ammo.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

From what you have said I think cleaning the gas tube/bolt carrier key/etc. would be a very good place to start.

Lead can build up in the gas port when shooting .22LR -- one of the reasons you should get a dedicated upper/gun for .22LR

Clean the piss out of it, lube and try again.

If you shoot 22lr through your dedicated 223 upper you need to fire some 223 rounds afterwards to clear the gas tube of all the fouling. Since this isn't possible at your range you may need to invest in a dedicated 22lr upper.

How does one clean a gas tube without tapping out the roll pin etc etc...

Exactly. I have since sold the .22 conversion and bought an mk22. Will no longer be shooting anything other than .223 through it. Just want to figure out this problem.. saw a guy on YouTube do it with a pipe cleaner. Anyone think it could be anything else.

100% the entrance to your gas tube is clogged solid with lead. Same thing happened to mine. Be prepared to pickup a new gas tube. Also, its gonna be a ***** to remove it from the gas block, itll be nicely seized in there.

i hope the pipe cleaner works :) this sounds like a pain in the ass..

Im usually not a pessimist, but start the ordering process now. Pipe cleaners aint gonna push out solidified lead.

Maybe you can make some neato crafts with them after

Hey guys, little update.. pipe cleaner didn't work, hehe.. I took the pin out of the front sight, took the front hand guard off the gun, etc. I can't pull the gas tube back out of the front sight.. Is it possible to get the tube out and another one in with the delta ring still on?

Oh ya, where to order a gas tube? :)

Heh, called it. Gonna need to pull the tube and gas block off your barrel in one piece. Then with some vice grips shimmy the tube out of the block. Send the tube to the garbage. Wolverine has gas tubes in stock. I'm sure questar etc do as well.

Hey I pulled the front A sight and tube off the front. I was thinking of replacing the front sight. If I have a 2 piece handguard would it need to be replaced if I ditch the front sight? If I need to get a whole new free float or something I might just go back to ordering a new gas tube and put the A sight back on.

Yea the factory 2 piece hand guard needs the ring on the front sight to hold it on. If you want to switch to a non-sight gas block you will need a different forend (disclaimer: there may be products that I don't know about that would negate that statement)
