I'll be putting an optic on my AR for the upcoming Service Rifle season. I've never used an optic on any kind of rifle in action shooting before, having done everything with iron sights before now. I don't know anything about mounting optics on the AR. I see a lot of cantilever mounts and understand these are for eye relief. Are these necessary on a firearm with a rail that runs from the back of the receiver to the end of the hand guard, where I can move the ring setup forward very far? Do they carry some other benefit I'm not seeing?
I guess essentially I want to know if one is worthwhile to purchase as opposed to traditional rings. I don't need any quick detach stuff really, and the rail atop the rifle is unused right now, aside from the irons. I will be keeping the iron sights on.
Any help and guidance is appreciated.
