I'll be putting an optic on my AR for the upcoming Service Rifle season. I've never used an optic on any kind of rifle in action shooting before, having done everything with iron sights before now. I don't know anything about mounting optics on the AR. I see a lot of cantilever mounts and understand these are for eye relief. Are these necessary on a firearm with a rail that runs from the back of the receiver to the end of the hand guard, where I can move the ring setup forward very far? Do they carry some other benefit I'm not seeing?

I guess essentially I want to know if one is worthwhile to purchase as opposed to traditional rings. I don't need any quick detach stuff really, and the rail atop the rifle is unused right now, aside from the irons. I will be keeping the iron sights on.

Any help and guidance is appreciated.

I had no problem getting reasonable eye relief on my flattop DMR rifle with conventional rings, but you need very tall rings or risers to get the scope high enough for a proper cheek weld.

Typical AR ring height needs to be 1.375 to 1.5" from ( top of rail to scope centerline ) so that makes your selection for rings much more limited than for a bolt gun

For example, for Badger Ordnance its their "Ultra High at 1.4"

Its "usable" if you don't have cantilever but most magnified optics are far more user friendly with a cantilever style on AR's .

Easy to tell ....just close your eyes and throw your rifle to your shoulder ...then look through the scope. If you have to hunt around for perfect eye relief its not user friendly

IMO I would always use a cantilever mount for AR

After you price a set of Badger rings you will realize you aren't going to standard rings to save money

Since standard rings are very limited in 1.4-1.5" height and you should use cantilever mount, there is no compelling reason whatsoever not to use a proper AR scope mount ( regardless if you want cantilever or not )

If you already have a set a good rings in a lower height for a bolt gun, you can always us a cantilever riser

There are lots of choices from Burris, Leupold, Nikon. Rock River Arms etc that are not quick release and inexpensive . I personally would go ADM or Larue
