AR Optic - RDS or TA11??

Hey Folks,

I am trying to come to a decision regarding optics for my LMT AR, which currently is wearing irons.

One one hand, I am thinking of putting a 2MOA Aimpoint T1 Micro (with a riser) on the rifle, and perhaps adding a flip up magnifier down the road at some point. I like the small size of the micro and the 2moa dot is good too.

On the other hand, I am toying with the idea of putting an ACOG (perhaps with a chevron reticle) on the rifle. Likely something with 3.5x magnification.

These optics and the rifle are for personal, not professional use.

Most of my shooting will be somewhere between 1-300 yards, but I will from time to time likely do some closer-in shooting. I know that picking up targets is really fast with the RDS as opposed to fixed magnification, but alot of folks also advise me that the AGOCS get fast with a bit of practice, even at CQB distances.

I had been considering an ELCAN Specdr 1-4, but from what I have read they seem to have some issues losing zero when switching back and forth and whatnot.

I suppose that I am looking for some opinions on the subject. Can anyone who has used both types of optics comment?

Why not have the best of both worlds?

I thought about the Spectre DR. In theory it seems great, but I have read that it loses it's zero when moving back and forth between settings.

Because it's expensive? ;) You could always just go with a RDS and magnifier, too. Or something like an Elcan Spectre DR.

The Spectre DR I've used appears to have a tiny shift, but in practical use I doubt you'd notice it. Zero it with the 4x setting then you're GTG. I like it as a package, the only downsides for me are the cost and weight. Others will hate on it for the mounts etc. but I like.

I've never used an ACOG, I definitely prefer non-magnified optics inside 100yd (which is 90% of my AR usage)

I've had an Eotech on my AR and once the novelty quickly wore off, picked up a TA11. I think the glass would be a better pairing with the quality of a LMT. Just my $0.02

Thanks guys.

Topdollar: How do you find the magnification of the ACOG affects you for shooting up close? Have you learned to use the optic quickly? Also, what reticle do you use?

Hope you don't mind if I jump in -

I use the TA31G on my Tavor (which is almost the same as the 11 except with different reticle) and shooting up close usually isn't a problem with the BAC design. Since you can use both eyes to shoot, CQB doesn't seem to be too much of a problem and it didn't take too long to adjust to it. Not as quick as say an Eotech, but still works fine.

The TA31G comes with a green chevron and a BDC and I really like it. I'd rather have the RCO's reticle, but they don't allow that outside of the US. Good luck.

Oh, and one other thing - my buddy has a Specter DR and has had no re-zeroing problems even while taking the scope off and putting it back on, nor when switching from 1-4x. So maybe it'd be a good idea to try and borrow one to see how you like it. I'm not sure about the higher magnification model as no one I know has it, maybe that's where the problem is.

I really like my acog ta11f red chevron. If you plan to shoot under 25y don't buy acog, but at 50y I prefer my acog to my friend eotech.

Acog are expensive, but are incredible piece of équipement. Here is mine with my LMT..... Yes the exact setup lol

I have the green chevron. Under 25 yards? I don't normally use sights and rather opt to shoot down the side of the rifle. From what I understand (haven't really employed the method), BAC is more for moving targets...wide field of view with what seems like zero magnification - put the cheveron on target and done. Military folks should know better!

Cool! What distance is that target at?
