Folks,..aside from Elcan, and the Acog,....What's out there that has good strength and reliability, and is not in the 2K range?..Lucid optics look good, but are not here yet?...Is there anything else around worth looking at?I have a few carbines and a rifle that need new glass...

Ya I'm looking for the gen III of the Lucid. Plan B right now is to find a Millett DMS 1-4X24 tactical scope. There seems to be more options that way right now.

My $0.02.

Lucid effectively has no warranty and seems to be having issues. The Millet is kinda heavy and has a lot of reported failures. Bushnell has two 1-4s coming out soon, one is under $200. Untested of course but Bushnell optics are usually pretty good for what you pay. Moving up a bit is Vortex which has a good warranty that you will need. Lots of failures. Leupold makes a few good ones under $800 and the NF NXS is around $1300. Tons of options but none of them are much help if you don't tell us what your use and expectations are.

Well,..the carbines I think would be suitable for something around the 4x-6x range- perhaps a good working optic for 3 gun....The 20" rifle,...anything really, but with a bit more magnification...all are flat tops BTW..

I had an Eotech but switched to a Burris Fullfeild II 3x9 and PEPR mount, haven't added a fastfire on the PEPR yet.

The Fullfeild II goes for around $200, has very nice glass and a simple cross hair.

Im waiting for the new Zeiss Terra3 line to come available. They start at 2-7x and should be somewhere between $400-$500 in Canada if what I have been reading online is true. Manufactured in Japan to cut down on costs and Zeiss is always good for optics.

Why do you say Lucid has no warranty and what issues are they having? As far as I know Lucid has a lifetime warranty.

Excellent post sir...

4x is more than enough for 3 gun. Anything that offers low end as well as 6x will cost you significantly. Aside from what Supernova suggested you also have Trijicon TR24 and several IOR variants. Of course cost climbs as the features add up.

FYI, you're gaining nothing over a 16" Ar with that 20" barrel.

I've got a Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x. Love the scope, just wish the red dot was brighter, its hard to see on snowy days.

I haven't had mine out in the snow but I could definitely see it being too dim in that environment. It seems good for everything else. I've got a question for you about yours though if you will. Did you have to adjust the eyeball focus a lot out of the box? Mine is about 10° away from hitting its stop turned towards the minus (-) side. With the diopter centered both the vertical and horizontal crosshairs are very fuzzy. Did you have this happen too? I also can't find a happy medium between having both the reticle and the dot focused. With the reticle crisp and clean the dot is a blurb no matter how low I adjust the brightness. With the dot focused, the reticle is squiggly. Usually I don't even have to adjust the diopter so I'm thinking (and hoping) I got a lemon.

I had a Millett DMS but found the optics not quite good enough in low light, so I got a Vortex 1-4x PST which was much better optically and the illuminated reticule worked a lot better in low light conditions. The only problem I had with the Vortex was with the illumination control which was consistent in operation (i.e did not always turn on) with the five position (low light setting) and the six position setting (day light setting). The scope was new according to the retailer I bought it off, however I found it odd that only these two positions on the illumination control had this problem! I sent the scope back to Vortex four weeks ago, since the retailer informed me that Vortex will only handle warranty claims from the purchaser and not the retailer any more.

The Millett DMS is quite a big scope and weighs 20 oz, however most 1-4x illuminated scopes weigh approximately the same. The following is a review of 1-4x scopes which I found useful http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_18/421244_The_variable__low_power_multipurpose_scope_review_thread.html also a lot of so called 1-4x scopes ware not true 1-4x scopes, such as the Leupold Vx2 1-4 and VX3 1-4

Do you need a magnified optic? If not then an Aimpoint would be a great buy. A T1/H1 micro or a comp m4 or PRO with the 2 MOA dots. Both eyes open shooting and they can be quite precise when the intensity of the light is turned down low. The eotech is also good.

If you want to go with a magnified optic, I would suggest not going cheap. There is a good sightron offering that goes from 1-7x and is sold by mystic precision (sight sponsor). h ttp://www.mysticprecision.com/wp/2176/sightron-1-7x24-lrirmoa-and-ir4a/ These are under 1k and are supposed to be very good glass. Leupold Mark 4 and Nightforce also make really good magnified AR type optics but they are starting to get more expensive.

If you are going for red dots, I can attest for the rsa-s, I have very little experience with it, but it is my only red dot, and so far it has been really nice.

This is just an example of Vortex glass. It's there Razor HD 5-20x50 EBR, vortex posted the pic on facebook page. (forgot to mention the tank in the picture is @ 1000yrds.)

I would assume the quality would be similar for some of there lower powered optics. I've only heard good things about them thus far.
