AR optics question...

Everyone knows Vortex has good glass. Their Razor line is some of the best glass available. The problem is the rest is cheaply made. Search Vortex issues in Google and you will see all that you have been missing. Viper turrets don't track properly, reticles rotating with power ring, illumination system failures. Even the Razors are having an uncomfortable number of failures. Sure the warranty is good but how can a company afford to keep replacing products over and over? Profit margins need to be very high for that. For the money I feel there are better options that are proven. Its not that they're nc star or anything, just not built to last like some others in their price range.

This is just an example of Vortex glass. It's there Razor HD 5-20x50 EBR, vortex posted the pic on facebook page. (forgot to mention the tank in the picture is @ 1000yrds.)

I would assume the quality would be similar for some of there lower powered optics. I've only heard good things about them thus far.

Vortex looks good,..though Leupold is good,.....think I'll stick with the C79 on the carbine for now,...maybe upgrade to the Spectre down the road..BTW is the Spectre any lighter than the C79?

Aimpoint Pro is a great option. Eotech makes great options as well. Carbines are ideally suited to ranges where magnification is of limited value, 4-6X magnification would mean recoil completely takes the scope off target with each shot and then you have to reaquire. At ranges under 100 metres where the carbine is best, lower magnification would be my choice. Both the Aimpoint and Eotech do have the option of a 3X magnifier though that can be added and removed at will.

If you want a 1x red dot I would go with the Aimpoint T-1.
If you want a 1-4 I would look at the Hi-Lux CMR from Wolverine or Wanstalls. I have one and it has great glass, turrets and reticle. It's one of the few ones out there with zero stop turrets as well. If you want to spend some more money for better glass look at Sightron, Trijicon, or Nightforce.
If you want more magnification then one of the 2-7 or 3-10 scopes from some of the better manufacturers can be had for around $1000.
Bushnell makes a good scope with a warranty that's hard to beat. I didn't mention Leupold because I think they are a little overpriced for what you get and you need to spend big bucks to get one with anything other than a duplex reticle.
You won't regret spending the extra money on a high end scope. It's something you can use on the next rifle and should last a lifetime. I just bought an Elcan Specter DR and it's amazing. Extremely clear and crisp image. I also picked up a Nightforce for my 338 a few months ago and have been purging my cheaper scopes ever since.
Buy what you can afford but you may be better off to save up a little longer and get a keeper instead of something that will do until you can afford something better.

More specifics on your intended use and ranges you plan to shoot at would help narrow it down.

I'm not sure that 1-4 will work for me, as I am more a target guy, and I would expect my rifles to target fine at 100 yards... 4x is a bit low at 100 yards for target.
Ok, I know an ar isnt a target rifle, but still, I am not in the military and I don't often raid buildings where I have to shoot talibans in the face.... unless I quit my job and join the army, which is not going to happen anytime soon I would say.

Maybe go 4-12 and then add fastfire on top or the perp mount for close range action?

Has anyone has any experience with the Millet TRS?

I was looking for something inexpensive that I can use on a purely range gun.... being able to dial up and see the holes in the paper is a nice plus. Am torn between a cheap variable or a fixed 6x or 10x (Leupold, bushnell?)

Folks,..aside from Elcan, and the Acog,....What's out there that has good strength and reliability, and is not in the 2K range?..Lucid optics look good, but are not here yet?...Is there anything else around worth looking at?I have a few carbines and a rifle that need new glass...

max range you plan on using it too?

I use my 2.4x scope on my Steyr Scout for 300m balloon targets. While it's not optimal it can be done...

I plan max 200 yards target.
Maybe some 4-16 with a red dot on top? or no red dot?
No need for a close range aiming device anyway, just point the rifle forward eh?

What AR do you have?

keltec su16F and
norinco ar15

I would like to have a target scope on the keltec and I'll probably end up with a 1-4 on the ar, or a red dot. Not going to shoot more than 50 yards with the norc ar15. Id like to target 200 yards with the keltec.

The norc will likely be more accurate than the kel tec, but neither of them are tack drivers. The 1-4 sounds perfect on the norc, and I'd suggest something in the 2-7x range for the kel tec. Considering the gun will only do around 2 MOA, putting a huge scope on it won't shrink your groups, especially at only 200 yards.

Just sold mine. Same warranty as Bushnell so lifetime replacement. Mine had issues with something coming loose inside then scratching up the glass. It was replaced for free.
Glass is decent, optical clarity would be similar to a Bushnell Elite 4200, reticule is pretty good, turrets are accurate and repeatable, not a bad scope but definitely not high end and you will end up replacing it down the road after someone with a high end scope lets you see what you are missing. If your never going beyond 300 yards it should be fine though.
They are big and heavy so not the greatest on an AR or other black rifle. Better suited to a tactical bolt action rifle.
The rings that they come with (if they still come with rings) are really high and while they look like Burris XTR they are cheap and strip out easily.

Good luck

rings that strip piss me off.
if I can strip a damn bolt with an allen key then it's a piece of #### bolt and shouldnt be allowed to be sold, period.
