There isn't a big difference. I shoot a 13" steel plate at 500+ yards with my Swiss Arms and 1-4 Razor HD. When you think about it, a 12"x12" target at 300 yards is 4MOA, which is pretty big. It also depends what you consider acceptable. If you're shooting a precision rifle and expect 1/2 minute groups, then you definitely want a more powerful scope. If you're happy hitting the target and maybe pulling off 2MOA groups, then irons do fine.
