Ok, so Christmas is around the corner and my shopping is mostly done, except for MY present.:dancingbanana:

I want to go black (got my restricted PAL already, thanks) and I am trying to decide between an AR and a CZ858-2. I have always wanted a C7 clone, but the CZ is half the cost and so is it's ammo. Also, the CZ is non-restricted, so that's another major plus. As for the AR, I build muscle memory and actually fire 5.56 for more than a single PWT-1 per year. Also, I can switch uppers and the sky's the limit for accessories. Finally, the biggest plus is for the CZ: I intend to leave it stock; so I can have at least one gun in the locker that isn't waiting for parts or work or an ATT.

What would you guys get first?

Why have a restricted licence with nothing on it.

Get the AR.
+1.
For numerous reasons, the emphasis should be on an AR...a REAL ONE... and then you can always obtain the CZ.
Don't waste your time, effort and patience on an AR clone...they are truly the
classic POS....buy once...buy right!

AR....AR......AR.....AR.......GOooooo AR. It is always easier to justify buying the cheaper gun later then the other way around. AR's are the sport car of guns, mods galore or can just leave it stock, have built many and have sold some, but will always have one.

for this reason....

Although wouldn't be a bi**h to findout after building a sweet AR that you like the 858 better all along?

shoot them both, if you want both - start with the pricey one.

now that palinak (on this board) has some mods for the 858 it could be a first look.

I want an AR CQB setup. If it has to be restricted then make it short! after that I'll likely order up a new 858

you could also get a CZ 58 (restricted ) and about 300 bucks cheaper than the non restricted version . then have more beer chits left over for the AR

I say CZ. Leave the range only guns till last. Get a super cool bush gun first and really scare the libby's.

Buy a decent AR - its a "must have" - lots of accessories to pimp it up and you can buy different uppers with different calibers & barrel lengths. Forget about that poser CZ858-2 POS  - pony up a few more bucks and buy a Robarm XCR when available, and/or used Robarm M96, Velmet Hunter or Velmet M78. Buying stuff like the CZ just f*cks up your toy fund, safe space and plans to buy the toys you really want. :runaway: Be patient - yes - Breath in deep ....... now exhale. Alright then! :D

Foxbat - I couldn't disagree with you more on all points. I bought a Norc AR clone from Dark for $500 - it was a great gun...never had one problem. not sure why people bash Norinco's so much:confused: , if you don't like em and have the cash, pay three times the price and get a bushmaster...but I know I don't have that kind of cash.....:(

That being said I sold it for $800 to buy a Cz-58. I like the 7.62x39 round much better (for many reasons) and it is a much more compact than the Norc. It's quite accurate and there are beginning to be more aftermarket parts available...although in stock configuration it is a lot of rifle for the money.

Clobb:runaway:

The C7 clone I have in mind is a 20" Stag Arms Flat Top. I do want both rifles, but the question is this: "Which one do I get now?" MY biggest concern is that CZ858-2s are not going to be around for too long at their current prices. An AR will always be a (roughly) $1400 gun.

I've got to say - I traded my Mini-14 for a Norinco AR awhile ago and I've had lots of fun with it. It's a great way to get into it on a budget. I'm doing a gradual build now, because I'm on a student budget. Whenever I can afford it, I pick up parts and bits to improve it with. Matter of fact, I'm selling my Norinco upper right now. Not to flog my wares or anything...

I tend to agree with this opinion. The CZ858 is at a nice price right now. Who knows how long that will last at this level? I recall in some thread (maybe the giant main VZ thread of 1700+ posts) that the 858 are not being made anymore. However, I'm not sure if that is true - maybe someone more in the know can chime in? If it is true, well you know it's better to get one now than later (Remember the $150 Garands in the late 1990s? - now the norm is $600+). The 858 is a great non-restricted buy with cheap ammo.

The AR series is also great. The prices on these have most likely stabilized and there is a little probability of production/availability ending soon. They will probably be available much longer than the 858's.

I'd get the 858 now and AR later.
