AR or T97

T97 is free to go anywhere, require less cleaning, less moving parts and very well balanced in weight distribution.

AR is restricted, require a bit more cleaning and care, very customization and fun.

I have both :) Love them both.

While I sold my T97 to get an AR, I liked the T97 platform as well. If it's for plinking and not competing, T97 will be as good or better, especially if you get the FTU.

I did the same. The T97 was nice, the only quams I had with it was:

1) It hated LAR mags
2) Fit and Finish wasn't fantastic. Yes, it's $1K, NR, and bullpup, but I thought the finish could have been better.

While it was great that I could go anywhere with it, I found I was at the range with it half the time anyways. Sold it a month or two later and picked up a Stag Arms 3R.

For NR duty, I'll pick up an XCR eventually. It appeals to me more, and it just seems like it'd suit me better, however I've yet to shoot one. Unfortunately the house is soaking up most of my expendable cash now, damn being a new home-owner lol.

If you don't care about classification, get an AR for sure. The "manual of arms" is well known and there is more courses and training videos available. My thought is, you'll have a chance to become a better shooter with an AR than you would with a T97.

Funny, I never even used the Norc pinned mag in my T97. My LAR and XCR mags worked flawlessly....and the reason I bought them originally was for the T97.

T97 ftw. I d like more info on that foregrip thing you ve installed on your t97. Any mod needed to fit it on? Thx

It is a Magpul AFG installed on the RIS kit originally designed for QBZ95, I found it on an airsoft forum a year back and bought it for 350 dollars. I believe there are only a few of them been brought into Canada and haven't seen any retailers sell them tho......I personally prefer it over FTU

The RIS kit fits good and pretty tight however since the new T97NSR has a slight different front post shape than QBZ95, one of the pieces from the RIS can not be installed.

And here is one of the various QC issues with these Chinese guns....inconsistent magwells. Another reason not to take a $1000 chance with it....might work with LAR mags, might not.

Well might also be the QC problem with LAR15, my T97 works flawlessly with LAR15 mag, Pmag, original mag.....

So you have 3 mags that work in your's? If every T-97 doesn't work with every STANAG mags then there is a problem.
Like I said earlier, wait until something breaks then try to get warranty or try to find parts. They are disposable rifles.
And there is always the 1.5 gas ports drilled into a number of them. Not a huge deal but just goes to show how little QC is done on these rifles.

I wanted one and have been on the waiting list with Canada Ammo since 2010 but now I'm not sure I want to spend the money, I've shot one and was fairly impressed but to me these should be priced closer to an M305.
It's fine if those of you that bought one like them and are happy with your purchase but don't try to tell me they are equal in quality to a US or Canadian made AR.

The OP stated that he doesn't care about classification so then in my opinion there is only one choice, spend $1200+ on an AR and never look back.

The don't have to work with NATO mags. They are probably designed to not do so. If our mags work that's a bonus. As for price they are sold for $400 each to dealers as I recall. So the price should be...the Canada Ammo price.

They were supposed to be designed to use STANAG (NATO) mags so yes they should work with all our mags. This wasn't a Chinese thing to make them only work with their mags it is a QC issue that they weren't built to spec.

So you think it's reasonable for the dealers to double the price on them for retail? Does that mean the M305's cost the dealers $225? Does a Daniel Defense AR cost them $600?

Here's a hint. They weren't built for us and our mags but the Asian market. You will note the factory mag is different. Price? $800 beats $1200. I would prefer them at $600 but that's because I would want everyone to have one. Strength in numbers.

Or perhaps they, like most things, are built entirely to spec. It's actually more a question of what those specs are. Bad specs in = bad stuff out. Until you know what the specific specifications are (blueprints), it's pretty hard to surmise that they are out of spec.

This was cut and paste from Wiki and they are talking about the QBZ-97 but our current NSR version is just a modified version of this one to make it Canada legal.

The Chinese have constructed an export version, the QBZ-97, which is similar to the QBZ-95 in all respects except that it is chambered for 5.56 mm NATO instead of the original Chinese 5.8 mm cartridge and has a deep magazine well designed to accept STANAG magazines. This rifle is currently used by Ginghis Security Academy, a Chinese private security group, supplementing their QBZ-95's.

Or perhaps they just have crap QC since some rifles work fine with STANAG mags and some don't.

That was Wiki-definite. The factory mag is close, but different. Measure them. There are QC issues but this isn't chief among them. Anyway, just sell it if it's 'crap.'

Or perhaps they are built entirely to spec. If the spec of the little changes to make it compatible with STANAG magazines and 5.56 are loose specs, or incorrect specs, then perhaps the gun won't function 100% of the time. If the specs for the feed ramp say it should be 20 degrees +/- 5 degrees, that is a huge spec variation. That is not to say QC is bad, it isn't. That is not to say the gun is poorly made, it isn't. It's just that whoever spec'ed out the details didn't know what they are doing.

So before we blame the the QC, or slave labour, or China, we should at least accept that who ever actually designed the coversion didn't spec it out correctly. Bad specs are not the same as bad QC.

It's the same thing with the T97 we see with all their other exported firearms....there is no consistency from one gun to the next. One might be fine and work well with AR15 mags, the next may not. One may have a barrel gouge, the next may not. One may have proper head space, the next may not. One may have a crooked FSB, the next may not. One may be loose and rattly, the next may not. The list goes on and on. That is not a "tolerance" problem as you suggest it's lack of QC at every step of the manufacturing process, and lack of QC at final inspection.
Norinco is the only manufacturer we seem to tolerate this from, and the reason is usually because they are priced right for what you get. Hell look at the Nork M14 section and the list of known issues and fixes and they are one of the better Nork products going.
I do think it's a neat/novelty type firearm....bullpup rifles being few and far between here in Canada. But with the lack of QC, and all the other short comings it's just not worth $1000 in my view.

Love my T97. Will be blasting a bunch more rounds through it in the next week or so. I plan to make a little youtube vid of it.

I have had my share of crappy Chinese guns, but this one is really awesome. Quality is excellent IMO. The only problem is parts availability. Safety and optics mounting are solved by the FTU and LHG by M14.ca.
