I am seriously considering the purchase of an AR type rifle in the next three months and I have no previous experience with this type of firearm. I have seen the Stag, DPMS and RRA variants and like the Stag configuration.
The rifle would be used for target only (100 yards) and eventually be equipped with optics in 223 chambering. I have a RPAL.
I am looking for any recommendations as to reliability and availability.

Yes, this topic popped up several times this past week. Search is your friend. Basically anything you buy here on the Canadian market is a well established an respectable brand. The online retailers also warrant the rifles. My preference, if you like the M4 carbine platform, is LMT (Lewis Machine & Tool) brand offered by Questar. Military features for a good price.

Buy Canadian, get a DLASK.

The range I shoot at has a couple of DLASK's in for sale atm, a 11.5" and a 14.5" or 16".

They looked pretty good upclose, but no one at the range had any experience with them yet.

Maybe one day I'll hear about it....

All the major brands are comparable. To the average user one is just as good as another. Now if you are picky about Mil-spec everything, taper front pins, parkerizing under the FSB then you have to see what each company manufactures. I had a couple Bushmasters and they shot as good as my LMT, Armalite, RRA, Colt and Diemaco (C7/C8) rifles.

these sites have good info as well...

hey guys,
what would everyone recommend as for barell length? would you go for the 16 inch barell, or go for the 20 inch? i think most of my range fun will be at the 100m range or closer, but the option for 200m, and 600 m range, are 45 mins away from here, so i may also get a membership to that range also. any feedback would be great thank you all.

The 16" bbl is probably your best overall compromise for the ranges you're talking about. As for Bushmaster, if you can be sure its of recent production, its worth taking a shot. Not so long ago, Bushmaster was having major quality control problems. They seem to have licked the problem with their most recent stuff, but I'd make sure to check everything over very carefully before I purchased their product. If buying from a store/dealer, check on their return/warranty policy before buying as well. You don't want to buy it, take it to the range and find that you've got a lemon that you can't sell without losing your shirt and can't get fixed without sending it to the US with a 8 month turnaround.
