In 2008, 337,000 AR15 style rifles were made in the US, and not exported, accounting for 22% of all US made rifles not exported. The number of ARs made since 1986 will exceed 2.5 million sometime this year. NRA...

Using "volume" as an execuse for jacking up the civilian firearms price is totally baseless. Civilians in the US buys more AR in one year than most military buy in 20 years.

High volume sales of ARs is a fairly new phenomenon.

I wonder why that is? Bill Clinton scum? We can thank W. for punching Clinton in the face. Biden in the White House? Americans are probably consuming everything AR like it was the cure for cancer.

All I know about AR statistics is this: Everyone and their dog seems to have gone AR mad down south.

I'll probably have to fight the AR nuts for .223 for my Mini 14...

It's actually been quite a string of crises down there. Semi-auto military rifles were just getting organically popular in the late 80's down there (and up here) due to availability (cold war surplus and expiration of all the AR patents), when a rash of mass killings raised the profile of the guns significantly. This led to talk of gun control on "assault weapons" and the 1989 import ban (driving people to domestic designs). Then came the Assault Weapon Ban in 1994, creating the "forbidden fruit" factor. Semi-auto sales skyrocketed. Then came 9/11, making people paranoid and patriotic, simultaneously. Then the Assault Weapons Ban expired in 2004, and people flocked to get all the gear they couldn't for the previous decade. Finally came Obama, quickly followed by the recession and fear of economic collapse. If you think about it, there has been some major event driving people to black rifles about every five years, for over 20 years now.
