What kind of longer range shooting do you want to do?
If you are going to use an actual scope, different reticles serve different purposes.
For example, the MTAC thread going on, speaks of the reticle this scope has which is good for swift target acquisition with the dot, but for longer range shots, it's not that great because the dot covers toomuch of the target.
The thread also talks of other scopes like the Vortex. It's reticle is better forlonger range shooting becuse of the finer display, but it is not the greatest for close range shots like in 3 gunning.
Can either work and fill the roles? For sure. Personally I am not a long range shooting guy and have problems with finite cross hair style reticles, but something like the Burris MTAC or Hilux CMR, which ar made for these purposes, serve me better since they are dot based.
I would tell you to get to a range or attend a clinic where the shooters have a mix of varying optics so you can try them out.
