AR shopping

Hi all,

I already own an older colt ar-15, but am now looking to purchase a more compact, lighter AR in .223/5.56, specifically the most compact/shortest barreled while still remaining unrestricted. Obviously reliability is huge and reasonable price range is also a factor. Honestly not trying to spark a debate here, just trying to find a light, compact, unrestricted AR for the zombie apocalypse.:p
any suggestions or links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

How do you own an older Colt AR-15 and not know all AR-15's are restricted by name? Particularly why would you be asking for a lighter more compact one “while still remaining unrestricted”? You know that that AR-15 you have is restricted right?

really? as i understood it, as long as a rifle meets the guidelines i.e. length, capacity, etc.- it is unrestricted, AR or other. So there are no unrestricted AR's to be purchased in Canada? i found a Bushmaster on sfrc that is really expensive and the note at the bottom says it is unrestricted with an 18.5 barrel. whats up?

For reference:

“restricted firearm” means
(a) a handgun that is not a prohibited firearm,
(b) a firearm that
(i) is not a prohibited firearm,
(ii) has a barrel less than 470 mm in length, and
(iii) is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner,
(c) a firearm that is designed or adapted to be fired when reduced to a length of less than 660 mm by folding, telescoping or otherwise, or
(d) a firearm of any other kind that is prescribed to be a restricted firearm;

PART 2
RESTRICTED FIREARMS
2. The firearm of the design commonly known as the M-16 rifle, and any variant or modified version of it, including the
(a) Colt AR-15; ... etc ...

thank you for the clarification Mirk. guess im shopping for a light, compact "carbine" now. beyond ridiculous that some rifles are restricted based on names and looks.

Not an AR then, must be a Bushmaster ACR with a non restricted barrel conversion and RCMP reclassification, hence the probably $3000+ pricetag.

You are going to have one heck of a time explaining how you have an AR-15 that isn't registered or at least isn't registered as restricted.
Ignorance is no excuse so you may find the water is going to get a little warm. Inheritance won't excuse you or your papa.
I really can't even fathom how you've been a member here since 2010 and have no idea that all AR's are restricted regardless of barrel length.

The force is not strong with this one.

Good luck, your gonna need it.

thanks for your advice cr5 and all who responded.

yeah i think thats the ACR then i was looking at. silly me, i guess everyone knows when you put a "C" between AR it can be non restricted.

I have my restricted pal and have for years, and the firearm in question is registered, and the transfer of ownership is currently pending from papa bear to me.

colt is legally still in dads possession while transfer is completed. we went and shot it together a few times and i started thinking i wanted to purchase a newer one.

nothing shady here, i'm just an avid pistol shooter with apparently limited knowledge of our government's bias against certain letters of the alphabet. guess i got some more reading to do.

the force is real strong over here, and i adhere to all laws and regulation pertaining to gun laws and safety.

my apologies for the uninformed inquiry.

that's what our wonderful forum here is for, right? the respectful exchange of information.

thanks again
happy shooting

If you just want minute of zombie accuracy a Ruger Mini 14 is a good choice, very reliable and lots of fun. If you want more accuracy at the sacrifice of weight the Target model is sweet. I have one in .223 and it does shoot MOA.

Have a real strong look at the IWI Tavor Tar 21. It will set you back in the $2700 area, but you have no idea how awesome it is to shoot that short of a non restricted out in the bush... takes AR mags (including Beowulf mags of course), it is battle proven by the IDF of Israel and is the nicest balanced .223 you will ever hold!

Vids from our very own in-house Tavor expert: TV-PressPass.

THANK YOU for your constructive input. now we're talkin! the pricetag may be justified. as we cant own unrestricted AR's, the next best options are the obvious choice. savin' up now. bullpup platform seems logical, ergo, and like sum super hot $#it. your video was informative and well presented. subscribed. yee haw

Yea, just to be clear, those are TV-PressPass' vids. He is the biggest wealth of knowledge on these babies in canada I would say.

He can sometimes be hard to get ahold of for questions, so if you don't hear back from him, try me as I feel I have a fair healthy bit of knowledge around them.

closest thing you can get to an AR without it being restricted is an rob arms XCR for appearance. I love my Tavor, but either rifle is fantastic, both are "over the beach" capable but you get a crisper trigger pull on the XCR. I'm not complaining about my Tavor or it's trigger, there will never be a negligent discharge ... you know you're pulling it.
