AR Shorty troubles- all fixed

I cleaned up the chamber and bought some good quality ammo in preperation to meet skinkious at EESA and try his M16 bolt and see if it helped the problem.
In the process I started messing with the bolt and carrier and with the help of a friend I discovered that the gas tube was very tight on the bolt.
Looking at the gas tube it appears to be bent and is binding on the bolt, I never noticed this before because I always used the chargin handle and just naturally gave a good tug.

I tried the bolt back in the Norinco upper and also on the old gas tube that was taken from the shorty upper and neither on of them bind like the pigtail tube.
I will try to straighten the gas tube and if that doesn`t work the I think I will put the original gas tube back on and start from scratch.

well i have never had an ar15 that i could not get running
the last 11ins i built was a #####! i nthe end i tryed everthing that could be done, as i have just about ever ar15 parts you can buy between the other ar15s i have
thinks i have will work
M16 bolt carrier, i will used no other!
and drilling the gas port
most of the barle ive taken off that have had that problems have under size gas ports for the size of barrle it is
so if u have a 16ins ar15 barrle that been cut to 10ins u will have feeding problems
1st thing Ditch the $80 pigtale it dont work!
use a m16 carrier and some ivi 556 ammo and it will work better
i would drill the gas port if i were you
but you can kiss your brass good by after that as far as reloading
pm me if you want help

+1
After my buddie drilled his gas port, his brass gets chewed up pretty bad, but he doesn't re-load, and it functions great, so no probs.

DRILL A PORT AS A LAST OPTION...

Opening up the port on achrome lined barrel pisses away a lot of protection from errosion on your gas port.

Anytime that you increase gas volume / flow rate you are going to get a increase in bolt velocity - increasing wear, failures to extract etc.

Attempt to do other fixes prior.

Thanks for all the help guys I got it working.
I took it apart and cleaned it properly like suggested and then I took off the pigtail , also as suggested and put back the original gas tube.
Took it to the range tonight and put 35-40 rounds through her without a single problem.Had to stop so the rifle night guys could shoot thier relay but would like to thank them for waiting while I tried it out.
I did not drill out the gas port.......thanks Kevin.

Oh yeah I broke out the tape measure because it just didn`t look like a 10" barrel and to my delight it`s only 7 1/2" plus the flash hider.

Damn is it loud

Robert,

An M16 carrier would just be more mass for his under-gassed rifle to move. You could spend $300 on useless parts that solve COMPLETELY different problems, or you could drill the gas port. D-Fender, Pigtail, Fatboy Gastube, M16 Carrier, H3/9mm buffer, Wolf Extra-Power extractor spring and buffer spring, they ALL solve a completely different and unrelated problem

Yesh, All I was asking if he solved it not using the m16 carrier.

I know that people saying that I needed to use a M16 carrier for my 14.5" to work and I never had a problem and I ran that winchester 45grn HP ammo through my AR.

I can confirm that Hicaliber's new toy is really, really fricken loud! And the flash is impressive too! He's gonna need a new pair of shades...... 8)
