I am new to the "AR" .22 market (so bare with me lol) and would like some clarification as to which ones are restricted and non-restricted and why? I am interested in the M&P 15-22 but its restricted, while others are not (10/22)? I think Im missing something here. I am looking for a good plinker that one could theoretically take to the bush as well. Thanks!

A 10/22 is not an AR, it's a 10/22.

All AR's are restricted. You can buy a NR rifle that looks like an AR, but not an AR.

Then go with a 10/22 or a mossberg tactical they are non restricted. the 10/22 has lots if aftermarket parts but I wouldn't go all crazy "tacticool" with it if you want to use hunting unless you want a lot of unwanted attention to yourself. As for s&w 15-22 it is a great restricted ar trainer and controls are true to the ar platform (charging handle) and can be modded with a lot of ar parts but only 10 round clips (thanks RCMP)

That's just my opinion,And not the gospel. Happy hunting

Btw mossberg 715 t is as is and not upgradable

Thanks for the replies so far. sDot, I realize that the 10/22 is not an AR hence the "" marks. Can anyone shed some light of why the M&P is restricted?

15-22 is restricted because of 16" barrel and mags are interchangeable with s&w rimfire ( a machine styled pistol)

Nope. It's restricted because it's considered an AR variant. The factory mags are limited to 10 because they're shared with a pistol version.

I wanted the S&W too but no rpal. oooh it looks like an AR so lets restrict it but the 715T that also looks like an AR is unrestricted LOL stupid laws. if someone went on a shooting rampage with a remington 700 then they would make all hunting rifles restricted too

One option is a 10/22 placed into an Archangel 556 stock. It makes for a nice little plinker, and 25 round mags, or even a 110-round drum is available.
I have one in an Archangel Nomad stock - which sucked a bit at first because of the unreliable aa922 mags...but now with the GSG 110-round drum mag, it's fun again!
Especially with 99 red balloons...in about 40 seconds.

the s&w isn't restricted because of how it looks, the sr22 and that mossberg .22 and many aftermarket stocks look just as tactical. its because its internal mechanisms are close enough to an AR that, as was mentioned on page 1, its classified as an AR variant. they could make a wood bodied non pistol grip/hunting style rifle with the same mechanism and it would still be restricted.

not that it shouldnt have an exception as its no more dangerous then any other semi auto .22 but the government made their laws, no AR variants

It is not just the S&W 15-22 that is restricted, the H&K 416, Chiappa M4 and Colt/Umarex M4 AR style .22 rifles are also restricted. The most annoying issue with the 15-22 is that it is restricted and the mags have to be pinned to 10 rounds. I sold my 15-22 and now have a CMMG .22 conversion for my 10.5" LMT AR upper and a dedicated 16" Tactical Solutions .22 upper, although the TacSol is more accurate, the LMT/CMMG is more fun.
