A good thread was getting going in the group section about AR features.........

What features do you guys like in an AR? Does it need to be ambi?

Do you like the chisled/angled look or the regular forged style?

A few guys had mentioned that they really liked the monolythic uppers.

Another point made was fitting aftermarket parts on the chisled/angled lowers and uppers.

I'm really liking all the new styles and features that are coming down the pipe and looking forward to seeing more a SHOT.
 
To be honest, the only things I'd like to see are ambi-controls and an enlarged magwell. Everything else is probably just going to add cost and can be covered more specific to the user with aftermarket additions. I've never shot a monolithic upper but IMO with modern rail systems and the rapid progression of the industry, it just means the in a short time your mono upper will not be able to be configured with up-to-date features (in as much as they help anything).

I think in all seriousness a fully ambi, like what KAC does but not an expensive stock like the SOPMOD and probably a standard MILSPEC trigger version.....cuts down on cost and in my opinion is the future....
 
I like the forged AR recievers especially the early style with no case deflector and no mag fence. I don't need ambi stuff.

I've seen a number of cool mono uppers over the last little while. I'm still not sure I would get one for myself either. I might look at getting one once I have a few more non-mono uppers :D

i'm saving for a "spare" AR right now. I may just go with another upper to compliment my current lower. I think I'll stay away from mono uppers though, for the reasons I mentioned above.

Actually, the whole group felt more productive - but I digress...

Ambi is ideal, yes. I like the chiseled/angular look that we're starting to see, and I really like the way we're headed with lightweight and minimalistic rail systems (Noveske, KAC, etc.) I've even seen one or two lowers that they stripped a few ounces off of. Lean, mean and a track-driving machine!

And I definitely don't want to see one in lime zombie green...
 
I like ambi safeties.
I like the adjustable stocks that don't chew your face or rip out your beard to maintain a cheek weld.
I like a grip not designed for a pygmy.
 
I like something that is simple, to the point, without all this shat hanging off it.
I got to play with some of the Colt Canada rifles with the monolithic uppers, specifically the ones the Royal Netherlands shooting team were using.

Lose the CAA stock, change the grip with an ERGO or something of the like, keep the ambi safety and a gen 1 or 2 badger latch, and IMO you are in business. Its sleek, not snaggy, there isn't cuts and grooves and fancy looking milling all over it for mud and every other kind of grime to get stuck into that you eventually got to clean out of it. Rails where you need em, since its a monolithic upper, you have yourself a free-floated barrel, its a win-win situation there! Their shooting team did a good job too.

Yeah love that monolithic upper...........On a side not I was looking at my mags today and I still like the old school CF mags.

?? Machined cuts out of the magwell? Something like what BFG did for the Redimag -> Redimod?

If not, I wonder if we'll see this soon.
 
Ugly is correct, Darren. No debate there. But since monolithic is not easy nor cheap to find here, I found myself a Troy TRX on the EE for an unbeatable price. Just slap a little piece of rail where you need it, keep the rest naked...... Jesus. I know what I am going for as hallowe'en now. Darren. Can I hang out near your shop!? Free publicity!

Here is another one of their monolithic upper, carbine length. They did this one up in an afternoon out of "spare parts they had laying around". So unfair. But good for us. Nothing wrong with using someone elses rifle with someone elses ammo. This one isn't as ugly either.
 
I don't get it. In my mind the whole ambi bambi thing is over blown. If it makes the rifle cost more, I'm not for it. What difference does it really make? If you're a right handed shooter, who cares about having controls for a lefty? If you're left handed and want to shoot that way, chances are you'd buy something to suit your needs like a Stag Arms AR.

Another "feature" I could care less about is some of the tacky logos and other items found on lower receivers. Canadian made lowers that have the obligatory maple leaf aren't exactly my favorite either.

Personally, if I'm going to need back-up sights then I want a fold down front sight instead of the fixed post. It's cleaner looking and won't interfer at all with the mounted optic. I realize some optics aren't bothered by the fixed sight but it's a preference for me.

It depends on what you are doing with said rifle. If you are like the majority here, and sitting back pounding paper, thats fine, but in the real world if I take a round in my arm and have to switch ambi controls can make a huge difference. Didn't happen to me, but it did to a good friend of mine. So my personal rifle is setup how I would actually fight with my work rifle, if that makes sense. When I am done with playing in the virus-borne poo-dust I will probably say phuq the ambi, but till then.... I keep it.

All the engravings. Meh....

Well, unfortunately guys with "work" rifles generally don't have a great deal of say in what they get do they? Too bad they don't.

Alas, men with tools will travel! When you actually go where others don't do your laundry and where there isn't hot water or a timmies/green bean, sights, stocks, grips, forends, :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:e like that gets swapped out with stuff that works.
