i've never seen 1 in person nor know anybody who owns 1 but all the hype and great looking guns on this site has really peeked my interest. I have a few questions.
do you need a rpal?
are they legal for hunting?
what's a good one to start out with at a reasonable price?
and how about scopes....i end up putting one on every gun i own...this would be no different.
thanks!

1.yes they are restricted.
2. yes you need a rpal.
3. no you cannot hunt with them. well technically you could if a critter shows up at your local range while you happened to be there shooting a AR.
4. a good and cheap one to start and learn on is the norinco cq
5. scopes are fine for AR's. There are millions of mounting options and scopes made specifically for the AR15.

so....where do you find these...good and cheap nirinco cq's?
and what makes them restricted? if it's mag capacity do they make any that don't require an rpal?

Many of the dealers at the top of the page carry them. I'd try Marstar first.

No, the status of a firearm is not determined by magazine capacity. All Ar15's are restricted by name and magazines designed for the Ar15 rifle are limited to 5 rounds (as are all other magazines designed for semi-auto center-fire rifles, with one or two named exceptions). There are other semi-auto rifles that are non-restricted but they are not based on the Ar-15 and are also quite a bit more expensive.

I'd also recommend reading the firearms act and the related regulations for reference purposes.

Sounds like you want a Robinson Arms XCR, or an Armalite AR-180...

Both non-restricted (you can hunt with), but both around $2000...

The exception being the LAR15, which can legally hold 10 rounds and will work in any black rifle that accepts AR-compatible magazines.

well that's certainly exciting! a lot more money but i could actually use them!!!
we do have a small gun club but no ar shoots ect..so one of these would certainly get a lot more use from me!!
2 grand is pretty dam steep tho!

Not an exception, they're designed as pistol mags for the RRA LAR15 pistol, not the Ar15 rifle, so 10 rounds is the limit for them. The fact that they worked in my Ar180b (when I still had it) is just a happy coincidence. ;)

so in a case where a clip is o.k'ed to ten rounds if said clip fits in a restricted firearm (restricted to 5)they are a legal combination?

you are catching on. essentially if a rifle can use a pistol magazine then its okay to use that ten round pistol mag in that centerfire rifle. it dosnt matter if the rifle is restricted or not. the sub 2000 is the best example of this. it is a carbine designed to use glock pistol mags and berretta pistol mags. even though its a carbine it can have a ten round magazine and be compliant with the law because it uses pistol mags.

p.s. dont call them clips.:dancingbanana:

It could fit into a non-restricted firearm too, doesn't matter what it will work in, just what it is designed for.

The key in all of this is that magazines designed for pistols are limited to 10 rounds, and magazines designed for semi-auto centerfire rifles are limited to 5 rounds. If a magazine designed for a pistol will work in a rifle, you're ok to use it in said rifle because the restriction is on the magazine, not the firearm.

Your probably better off getting the Norinco AR15, mine as great and I enjoy it lots. The other side to this is hopefully not soon but one day we will have another Liberal government and all non-restricted semi autos will be restricted anyways so save your money on that XCR and get the AR. In the case of hunting your better off with a hunting rifle anyways.

thanks for the info guys! i love loopholes :)
magazine...magazine...magazine.....hehe
beachead...i agree with you're line of thinking, i'll start by looking into taking a rpal course or whatever is needed to upgrade to rpal!
