I know this came up in the past, but I can't seem to find it.
My question is, in light of MRP and VIS upper, are monolithic upper have advantage over AR upper with separate handguard? Some claim that it offers better balance and overall shooting, but I really don't know what that means, while others say monolithic offers more solid platform and less movement, since the whole upper is in one piece. But I seem to recall someone arguing that having separate upper and handguard is better.

What's the verdict on this? Is there clear advantage at all, between these two approach?

p.s. Concerning VLTOR VIS upper, is it comparable to other AR upper, in terms of quality? I know it's extreme to question it, but is the product battle worthy? How does it compare to, say, Larue or DD?

The main reason the monolithics did not go anywhere with the US mil was due to the fact the M203 count not be mounted in a manner that it would pass the testing.

The monolithics also suffer from the fact if the rail is damaged the necessitate tossing the entire upper -- not just removing and replacing the rail. They also have non standard bbl attachment with the MRP.

IMHO the VLTOR system is better than the LMT MRP --but the MRP was the first commerical monolithic.

The monoliths due to the fact they where machined in one peice will always be more closely aligned that a bolt on tube. To a degree I am not sure if it is necessary.

Oh, that's right. VIS upper is actually joined by Salt dip brazing. Wow, joint is actually is stronger than the monolithic upper.

KevinB - Thanks. I was waiting for your opinion. I guess it makes sense. It the advantage with the monolithic upper isn't significantly higher than the disadvantage, arising from the posibility of damage incured in the field, than I guess it makes no sense to pay that much more for the platform.

Mebiuspower - What kind of handguard will you mount on the MUR? I've read the MilitaryMorons' report, and it seems the design of the MUR requires a bit of modifying for any Rail system with Anti-Rotation attachment.

^From what I gather, no modification is necessary if you mount DD FF rails on.

Larue/Troy however require modification. I have a Troy on mine.

I have a LMT MRP and am quite happy with it. For a my purposes it works great. Makes a nice stable platform for optics ect.
